Sam Boyd was a three-sport athlete for the Mountaineers back in the 1950s. As a member of the football team he played on the offensive line that opened holes for Bill Rhodes (the school's all-time leading rusher) fullback and linebacker. He also was ranked No. 8 in the nation as a punter one year. In wrestling, he placed all four years in wrestling and was the heavyweight champion one year. He also lettered two years in tennis. He continues to be a friend of Mountaineer athletics from his home in Atascadero, Calif., by coming out every year to help with the annual wrestling reverse raffle fund raiser.
