In just two years, Jayson Merrill (1990-91) left his mark one of the top Western State quarterbacks ever. Playing for coach Duke Iverson, Merrill went on to earn All-RMAC, AP Little All-American and NAIA All-American honors. In 1991, Merrill set the RMAC and the Nation on fire. Merrill set Western State season records for completions (195), passing yards (3,484), yards per-game (348.9), touchdowns (35), total offense (3,369) and total offense yards per-game (336.9). Thanks to that season, Merrill holds the NCAA Division II record for for Most Yards Gained Per Attempt in a season with 11.3. For his career, Merrill ranks first in Western State history for touchdowns (56) and is second for passing yards with 5,830.
