Haebe's accomplishments in his first two years at Western were remarkable as he ran to the 2011 NCAA D-II cross country individual title—leading the Mountaineers to the team title—and the 3,000-meter steeplechase title at the 2012 NCAA outdoor championship meet. In all, he collected seven All-American honors during that brief span, and his steeplechase time from the 2012 Portland (Ore.) Track Festival remains the fourth fastest in NCAA D-II history. Even more remarkable, though, was his return to action after suffering a traumatic brain injury following his NCAA steeplechase win and an appearance in the 2012 Olympic Trials. Haebe emerged from a coma and persevered through rehabilitation to return to the Mountaineer program and score points for the team in Western's RMAC indoor track & field title in 2015.
