Gene Williams could arguably be the best wrestler ever to come out of Western State. Williams, a 123-pounder, attended Western from 1955-59. During those years the Western State wrestling team competed against wrestlers from all divisions. Despite this, Williams still managed to go 55-5 during his WSC career and was an amazing 45-1 during dual meets. Williams was a three-time Rocky Mountain Conference champion and as a junior finished third at the NCAA Nationals to earn All-American honors. Williams also won two Rocky Mountain AAU Championships. After graduating from Western, Williams coached at Grand Junction’s Central High School and Fruita Monument High School.
