AZUSA, Calif. Several Mountaineers will compete on the final weekend of qualifying for the 2024 NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships. First up is Friday and Saturday's Franson Last Chance Meet at Azusa Pacific University, followed by Sunday's Cal State Los Angeles Very Last Chance Meet.
The event schedule for the Franson puts Western's
Myia Dantzler,
Jada Hynds and
Esteban Deniz on the track Friday at APU's Cougar Athletic Stadium.
Members of a women's 4x100-meter relay that will compete on Saturday, Dantzler and Hynds will tune up for the relay with Friday's 100m dash. The NCAA Division II provisional time standard in the event is 11.81 seconds, and the current 20th-ranked time is 11.57.
Dantzler and Hynds both registered their season bests in the individual event at April's Mav Invite #2 at Colorado Mesa University. Dantzler posted a career best at the meet, altitude-adjusted to 11.93, while Hynds raced to a 12.33.
Late in Friday's schedule will be the men's 5,000-meter run with Deniz taking his laps on the oval.
He has the 41st ranked time on the NCAA provisional qualifying list with a time of 14 minutes, 9.45 seconds, and will be looking to improve that clocking with a goal of a top 20 time, a mark currently sitting at 13:57.43.
Franson's Saturday schedule will see Dantzler and Hynds joined by
Sakara Harrison and
Kaiya Firor on the 4x100 relay. Western's season-best time of 46.13 seconds ranks 36th on the provisional list with the foursome seeking to break into the top 12 (45.36).
In the late afternoon Saturday, both Firor and
Kelia Portis will make one circuit on the oval in the women's 400m hurdles. Firor's run is simply staying 'race ready' for the NCAA meet as she is fifth nationally with a time of 59.01 seconds. Portis also has a provisional time (1:02.25), ranking 48th and seeking at least a top 20 time (1:00.74).
Soon after, Harrison will step into the blocks for the women's 200. Her current provisional time of 24.25 is 60th nationally with the No. 20 time looming just ahead at 23.69.
Western's final runner at APU will be
Jackson Schwartz in the men's 3,000m steeplechase. Schwartz has not hit the provisional standard (9:12.31) this season, but last season hit the mark with a season-best time of 9:02.60. The 20th-ranked national time heading into the weekend is at 8:57.55.
Also competing at the Franson on Saturday will be
Sammie Bretz in the women's high jump. She is ranked 26th nationally with a height of 1.70 meters (5 feet-7 inches). Bretz will be looking to improve that mark, with the current height of 1.72 (5-7.75) sitting 20th in the nation.
Sunday's Very Last Chance Meet takes place at Cal State LA's Jesse Owens Track, one of the six sites selected as a training track for those competing at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Western is scheduled to have Portis, Bretz, and the 4x100 relay competing at the meet, each depending on results from the Franson Last Chance Meet.
