SAN ANGELO, Texas  Aidan McDowell of the Western Colorado Mountaineers men's basketball program has been named to the D2CCA South Central All-Region First Team following an outstanding season as announced by the men's regional coordinator.Â
The sophomore guard from Crete, Nebraska delivered one of the most impressive offensive performances in NCAA Division II men's basketball this year. McDowell also earned First Team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors while leading all of Division II in scoring, averaging 26.7 points per game.
Throughout the season, McDowell established himself as one of the nation's most consistent offensive threats. He scored 30 or more points in nine games and surpassed the 20-point mark in 25 of Western's 28 contests. The sophomore started and appeared in all 28 games for the Mountaineers and led the RMAC in field goals made with 227, finishing 41 ahead of the next closest player.
He was also one of the conference's most reliable players at the free-throw line, shooting an impressive 90.1 percent (201-of-223), which ranked third in the RMAC. His 201 made free throws were nearly 50 more than the next closest player in the conference.
From beyond the arc, McDowell remained equally dangerous, knocking down 101 three-pointers on the season. That total ranks among the top single-season marks in Western's record book, trailing only Robbie Ballard (113 in 1999–2000), Nate Allen (111 in 1996–97), and Chris Pierce (109 in 1995–96).
McDowell also ranked ninth in the RMAC in three-point percentage at 38 percent and proved to be an ironman for the Mountaineers, leading the conference in minutes played at 37.4 per game.
"We are all very excited for Aidan to be bestowed this great honor," Head Coach Zac Claus said. "He absolutely earned it with his combination of hard work and determination. To put up these types of offensive numbers with the attention he garnered throughout the season makes the achievement that much more impressive. Aidan was a tremendous teammate and brought an incredible spirit to our team."
