LOS ANGELESÂ Western Colorado track & field on Sunday gave it one final push in the hunt for NCAA provisional marks, participating in the Cal State LA Very Last, Last Chance Meet at the Golden Eagles' Jesse Owens Track.
Fresh from Friday and Saturday's last chance meet in Azusa, California, the Mountaineers' women's 4x100-meter relay, Kelia Portis, Sakara Harrison and Sammie Bretz competed in their events on consecutive days in search of improving their standings on the NCAA Division II national performance list.
The 4x100 relay quartet of Jada Hinds, Kaiya Firor, Harrison, and Myia Dantzler set a school record (45.99 seconds) Saturday in Azusa, improving to 34th nationally, but on Sunday in LA fell just shy of that time, placing fourth with a time of 46.88.
Portis' 400-meter hurdles time (1:02.25) ranks 56th on the women's performance list, and on Sunday she neared that mark, placing second in a time of 1 minute, 2.84 seconds.
Similarly, Harrison was trying to climb the rankings in the 200m dash, entering the weekend 66th nationally (24.25), and in LA she, too, came close to that season best, placing fourth overall with a time of 24.55.
Bretz went to LA ranked 30th in the women's high jump with a season-best height of 1.70 meters (5 feet-7 inches), didn't quite hit that height in Azusa then on Sunday finished second in LA at 1.65m (5-5).
