GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Mountaineer track and field team opened competition at Colorado Mesa University with a strong showing on day one of the two-day meet Thursday afternoon.
Leading the way was
Gaby Huggins, who delivered an outstanding performance in the women's long jump. She secured first place on her opening attempt with a leap of 5.97 meters (19-7.0), setting a new personal record and moving up to fourth all-time in program history.
Action began in the hammer throw, where
Brock Baumgart placed seventh in the men's competition with a mark of 47.07 meters (154-5.0). The Mountaineer women followed with an impressive group effort, placing five athletes in the top 10.
Katrina Trahan led the group with a fourth-place finish (43.47m), followed closely by
Johanna Brown in fifth (43.37m) and
Louisa Hess in sixth (42.00m).
In the javelin,
Colin Johnson and
Alexander Taylor placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's event with throws of 44.54m and 39.56m. On the women's side,
Lindsey Osterfelt earned fourth place with a mark of 36.59m on her final attempt.
The men's long jump also saw strong performances, as
Braxton Walk finished fourth with a leap of 6.57m (21-6.75), while
Shawn Carter placed sixth at 6.51m (21-4.25).
On the track,
Jan Thewes turned in a standout performance in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing second with a time of 9:09.19.
Jayda Nix added a sixth-place finish in the women's steeplechase, crossing the line in 11:53.46.
The day concluded with the women's 5,000 meters, where
Annaka Rudolph placed seventh with a time of 18:14.38.
With multiple top finishes and a record-setting performance, the Mountaineers built strong momentum heading into day two of competition. Day two will begin at 9 a.m.
