Track & Field Gracen Key

Western Depth on Display at RMAC Meet

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.  Day 2 of the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship proved to be a whirlwind for the Western Colorado squad. While a few events did not go as hoped for by the Mountaineers, there were quite a few that did, including the breaking of a meet and facility record.

Many performances came from individuals that were not originally ranked, projected to score points, or advance to finals. Their efforts remind that on any given day, anything is possible — you simply must believe and execute.

Braxton Walk, a freshman long jumper, got the ball rolling with an impressive leap of 7.20 meters (23 feet-7.25 inches) securing a podium finish of third place. His performance set the tone for the day, leading the way for many other Mountaineers to step up.

Colton Stice, a middle-distance senior, ran a personal best of 1 minute,54.10 seconds to secure the final spot in Sunday's men's 800m final. Stice was originally ranked thirteenth but stepped up for the Mountaineers and is now in scoring position during finals.

Sean House also stepped up in a significant way throwing 56.20 meters (184 feet-4.5 inches) in the men's javelin and securing a seventh-place finish and a much-needed two points for the Mountaineers. House was originally ranked fourteenth entering the championship

Freshman pole vaulter Brayden Jones continued this positive and upward momentum for Western by finishing fifth and securing four points for the Mountaineers with a vault of 4.56m (14-11.5).

The highlight of the day, however, goes to All-American steeplechase standout Allison Beasley as she ran a time of 10:26.54 to secure her second consecutive RMAC title while simultaneously breaking the facility and RMAC meet record in the women's 3,000m steeplechase.

It was also a successful day for the men's 3,000m steeplechasers. Eddie Siuda and Patrick Jirele ran extremely tactical races to secure a total of 12 points between the pair. In a nailbiting finish, Siuda was clipped at the line and finished second, narrowly missing first place by 0.04 seconds. His official time was 9:07.56. Jirele finished sixth with a time of 9:19.60.

Other highlights for Western:

  • Eireann Donohoe finished seventh in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.54m (18-2)
  • Regan Thorne and Kelia Portis secured spots in the women's 100-hurdle final, running 14.34 and 14.89, respectively
  • Sam Burns clenched a spot in the finals of the men's 100H, running 14.83
  • Emma Kjellsen secured the final spot in the 800m finals with a nailbiting finish and a time of 2:11.51. She will race in the finals for both the 800m and 1500m on Sunday
  • Kaiya Firor and Sakara Harrison solidified their place in the 200m finals by running 24.22 and 24.46, respectively. Her time was an NCAA provisional mark for Firor
  • Landon Gary coasted through the finish line to secure a spot in the 200m finals with a time of 21.63. He will also compete on the 4x100 relay and the open 400 during Sunday's finals

The third and final day of the RMAC Outdoor Championship will commence Sunday at 11:30 a.m. with the men's shot put.
