5 More Provisionals, 4 1st’s at Haering Invite

PUEBLO, Colo.  The Mountaineer track & field program picked up where it left off the previous weekend, adding five more NCAA Division II provisional marks Saturday at the Chuck Haering Open Invitational to add to the four from seven days ago.

Western Colorado, competing at Colorado State University Pueblo's ThunderBowl, picked up its first provisional of the day with its first female competitor of the day on the oval as Allison Beasley raced to a 13-second victory in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. An All-American in the event in 2023, on Saturday she crossed the finish with a time of 10 minutes, 32.61 seconds, far under the NCAA provisional cut (11:02.99). The applied altitude adjustment should put her time around 10:18.22, which would lead the nation in the event.

Not much later in the event schedule was the 1,500m run, and Western picked up three provisionals from the event.

The men's competition stepped up to the starting line first, and by the end of the event Western had earned first- and second-place finishes from Simon Kelati and Tyler Nord, respectively.

The pair finished almost literally shoulder to shoulder, with Kelati crossing in 3:48.59 and Nord just 2/100ths behind. Kelati's altitude adjusted time of 3:44.00 could finish the weekend fourth nationally, while Nord's 3:44.02 should be next in fifth place on the national performance list.

The women's heats were next, and Emma Kjellsen didn't disappoint, finishing third with a time of 4:31.90. The altitude adjustment drops that time to around 4:26.44, a clocking that could be fourth nationally after the weekend and most certainly under the 4:31.00 provisional mark.

Late in the meet schedule was the women's 400m hurdles and Western's Kaiya Firor crossed the finish line first, posting a winning time of 1:01.71. The altitude adjustment for sprinters actually rolls the other way, but her adjusted time of 1:01.82 still surpassed the provisional standard (1:02.36), and could see her ranked seventh on the national performance list.

The Mountaineers added another first-place finish during the day as Sam Burns registered a collegiate-best time of 14.93 seconds to capture the men's 110m hurdles.

The women's high jump added to Western's first-place tally sheet as Sammie Bretz tied for the top spot. She, teammate Nykole Meshew and a competitor from New Mexico Highlands University each cleared a height of 1.65 meters (5 feet-4.75 inches), but Bretz and the Highlands jumper had zero misses until the failed height to edge out Meshew, who placed third after missing three jumps on the way to the final cleared height by all three.

The men's long jump produced second-, third- and fourth-place jumps from Mountaineers. Braxton Walk led the trio with a collegiate-best leap of 9.93m (22-8.75), a distance equally covered by Scott Grable, who settled for third after the tiebreaker – second best jump of the individuals involved – was applied. Dakota Merritt was fourth with a best jump of 6.55m (21-5.75).

Logan Butterfield added a second place with his collegiate-best toss of 54.62m (179-2.25) in the men's hammer throw and at the finish of the day registered a career-best spin and eighth-place throw of 44.84m (147-1.25) in the discus. And in the women's shot put, Western's Ali Aldrich finished second with a heave of 14.81m (48-7) after earlier placing ninth in the hammer (46.33m, 152-0).

Two of Western's relay squads added runner-up finishes during the day.

The men's 4x100 foursome of Nate Jackson, Noe Garcia, Landon Gary and Malcom Wesley combined for a second-place time of 41.79 seconds.

In the final event of the day on the oval at the ThunderBowl, the quartet of Firor, Sakara Harrison, Peyton Weiss and Kelia Portis registered a second-place time of 3:50.60 in the women's 4x400. Their time is the ninth fastest in program history.
