Mountaineers Score More Provisional Marks at Invite

PUEBLO, Colo.  Western Colorado on Saturday added three more NCAA provisional marks to a stellar opening weekend of the outdoor track & field season, scoring new marks from Sammie Bretz, Allison Beasley and Ali Aldrich on the final day of the Spank Blasing Invite.

Bretz won the women's high jump, clearing a height of 1.70 meters (5 feet-6.75 inches), equaling her outdoor personal best and surpassing the provisional height of 1.67m.

Aldrich finished third in the women's shot put, hitting her provisional throw of 14.23m (46-8) on her third attempt. Her toss easily passed the provisional distance of 13.81m.

On the oval at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl, Beasley finished third in the women's 1,500-meter run, posting a time of 4 minutes, 34.69 seconds, moving from fourth to third in the race at the mid-point before posting the second-fastest closing 400 (1:10.89) to nearly catch the runner-up. The altitude adjustment to her time improves her clocking to 4:28.91, besting the provisional time of 4:31.00.

Western picked up several more top-five finishes on Saturday:
  • Regan Thorne scored a second-place finish in the women's 100m hurdles, crossing the line in a time of 14.20 seconds, setting a new Western Colorado record
  • Kaiya Firor finished third in the women's 200m dash in a school record time of 24.25, and fifth in the 100 (11.99)
  • Sakara Harrison was fifth in the women's 200 (24.54)
  • Eireann Donohoe – who earned a provisional mark Friday in the women's triple jump – landed in the long jump pit with a leap of 5.66m (18-6.75) to pick up a third-place for the Mountaineers
  • Branden Davis opened Saturday morning's event schedule with a fifth place in the men's 5,000m run with a time of 14:59.13
  • Also earning a fifth place for the Mountaineer men was Brayden Jones who cleared a height of 4.22m (13-10) in the pole vault competition
  • Kelia Portis led off the women's 4x100 relay for Western, handing things over after her opening leg to Sakara Harrison, Cora Olson and Firor, who crossed the finish in second place with a time of 46.91 seconds, trailing only Division I Air Force by 0.29 seconds
  • The quartet of Harrison, Kiarra Lapp, Reece Mercer and Lauren Willson combined for a fourth-place finish in the final event of the day, the women's 4x400 relay. The foursome posted a finishing time of 4:00.78
Top 10 individual finishes for the Mountaineers were secured by Willson (8th, women's 1,500), Portis (7th, women's 100H), Sam Burns (10th, men's 110H), Landon Gary (6th, men's 400), Connor Prost (10th, men's 400), Beasley (7th, women's 800), Olson (7th, women's long jump), Nykole Meshew (T-3rd, women's high jump), Philip Lawrence (7th, men's shot put).

The men's 4x100 relay squad of Nate Jackson, Noe Garcia, Burns and Gary were sixth (41.93), and the quartet of Burns, CJ Davis, Bryce Kizewski and Garcia placed eighth in the 4x400 (3:30.60).

LOOKING AHEAD
The Mountaineers will head right back to Pueblo next weekend to participate in the March 29-30 CSU Pueblo Open Invitational at the ThunderBowl.
