Mountaineers Look to Continue Momentum against Eagles, Cougars

GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado will take on Chadron State and Colorado Christian for the season time this season. The Eagles will head to Paul Wright Gym on Friday, February 9 for a 5 p.m. tip off followed by a 3 p.m. tip off Saturday, Feb. 10 against the Cougars.  

Earlier this season, the Mountaineers travelled to both Colorado Christian and Chadron State and went 0-2 on that weekend (Dec.7, Dec.9). Western Colorado fell to the Cougars 80-73 while Ivey Schmidt led her team with 20 points and six rebounds. In their next game against the Eagles, Rachel Cockman registered a game-high 18-points in the 55-49 loss.  

The Mountaineers will support Mental Health Awareness on Friday night, followed by a red out game against the Cougars.  

MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats 

  • Western Colorado (5-14, 3-11 RMAC) is coming off a week where they went 1-1 at home against Colorado Mesa and Westminster. The Mountaineers took the Mavericks into double overtime Tuesday night but fell 76-70 as Schmidt led her team with 18 points. Brooklyn Seymour also registered a season-high 17 points going 4-for-13 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line.  
  • In Western Colorado's 68-58 win over Westminster, Jayda Maves led all players with 19 points and registered her first double-double of the season with a career-high 13 rebounds. Alyssa Eckroth also had a career night with 17 points.  
  • Rachel Cockman and Jayda Maves continue to lead the Mountaineers in scoring as Cockman has registered 16.7 in 18 games this season while Maves has 12.2 points per game in 19 contests this season. Cockman also leads the Mountaineers' rebounding efforts with 7.8 rebounds per game.  

EAGLES HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • The Eagles (6-13, 4-11 RMAC) are coming off a midweek loss to Colorado Christian 89-76. The Eagles outscored Colorado Christian 33-16 in the second quarter, but it was not enough as they totaled just 30 points in the second half.  
  • Megan Counts was one of four players in double figures for the Eagles. Counts registered 15 points going 5-for-7 from the field and 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Ashayla Powers was Chadron State's second highest scorer with 14 points, followed by Kylie Kriss with 11 and Liberty Line with 10.  
  • Powers' leads Chadron State with 11.9 points per game while shooting 54% from the field this season. The junior also leads her team in rebounding with 5.9 rebounds per game.  

COUGARS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • Colorado Christian (12-9, 8-7 RMAC) registered their 8th conference win of the season. The Cougars had a quartet of players score double-digits headlined by Maggie Hutka's 30-point game. Hutka went 9-for-17 from the field and 12-for-13 from the free throw line. Nicole Bowlin registered 21 points Wednesday night while Regan LoConte scored 18 points, followed by Dasiya Jones' 11 points. The Cougars made over 50% of their shots in both the first and third quarters while making 43% of their shots in the second quarter.  
  • Hutka leads Diane Thompsons' squad averaging 20 points per game while shooting a 49-clip from the field. Bowlin also is averaging double figures for the Cougars with 10.1 points per game.  
  • Jones leads the Cougars' rebounding efforts with 7.8 rebounds per game. Hutka is right behind her with 7.1 rebounds per game. The duo has also combined for 48 steals and 23 blocks on the season.  

UP NEXT 

Western Colorado will hit the road for the first time since Jan. 27, as it will take on Adams State on Friday, Feb. 16 at 5:30. The Mountaineers will then face Fort Lewis at 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 17 in Durango, Colo.
