Mountaineers Hit the Road for Final Two Games of the Season

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. Western Colorado will hit the road for one more time in the regular season taking on Westminster University Thursday, February 29 at 5 p.m., before taking on the nation's seventh best team in Colorado Mesa. The Mountaineers will conclude their season in Grand Junction, Colo with tip-off against the Mavericks on Saturday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m.  

WESTERN COLORADO HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats 

  • Western Colorado (6-19, 4-16 RMAC) went 0-2 in its final home games of the season but battled hard against Regis and University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Against the Rangers, Erika Lane scored 15 points, just one shy of her career-high, while she also registered six rebounds. In the Mountaineers final home game, Ivey Schmidt registered her fourth game with 20 or more points. 
  • Against Westminster earlier this season, the Mountaineers came up with a 10-point win (68-58) as Jayda Maves registered a double-double with 13 rebounds and 19 points. Alyssa Eckroth scored 17 points, while Schmidt registered 13 points. While Maves led with her 13 rebounds Natalie Jojola registered seven rebounds with four defensive boards. Western Colorado took Colorado Mesa to double overtime in a close game, but the Mountaineers fell 76-70. Schmidt, Jojola, Eckroth and Brooklyn Seymour all scored in double figures, while Schmidt, Eckroth and Seymour all tallied eight rebounds each.  
  • Rachel Cockman leads the Mountaineers with 15.5 points per game, followed by Maves who has recorded 12.0 points per game. Cockman also leads Western Colorado with 45% shooting from the field, while Schmidt has tallied 42% shooting from the field.  
  • Cockman not only leads in offensive categories, but she leads the team in rebounds per game with 7.4. Seymour has the second most rebounds per game on the team with 5.1, while Schmidt has 5.0 rebounds per game. Schmidt has tallied 27 steals and is one of three Mountaineers to record 20 + steals this season.  

WESTMINSTER HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • The Griffins (3-24, 1-20 RMAC) are looking for their first win since January 19, against South Dakota Mines, 69-59. Westminster fell to Colorado Mesa on Tuesday 77-55 after Elizabeth Means recorded 18 points and 7 rebounds against the Mavericks.  
  • Against Western Colorado, Maunayia Harrigfeld tallied 18 points followed by Teulia Nawahine with 15 points. Means led the Griffins with 13 rebounds collecting a double-double with 12 points.  
  • Through 27 games this season, Nawahine and Means lead the Griffins in scoring efforts with 11.7 and 10.0 points per game, respectively. Means hold the best scoring average, 11.5 points per game, against conference opponents. Harrigfeld has 8.7 rebounds per game for the Griffins with 34 steals and 28 blocked shots.  

COLORADO MESA HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • The Mavericks are riding a five-game winning streak, which started with a win against No. 20 Colorado School of Mines on Feb. 16. In their latest contest, Josee Steadman registered a career-high 28 points, while Olivia Reed and Laura Gutierrez also scored in double-digits. Reed led the Mavericks defensively with 13 rebounds including 8 defensive boards.  
  • In their double overtime win against the Mountaineers, Reed scored a career-high 30 points going 13-for-27 from the field. Mason Rowland and Kylie Kravig registered 16 and 15 points for the Mavs, respectively in the contest. Reed and Rowlan also recorded double doubles with 24 and 12 rebounds respectively to go along with their high scoring point totals.  
  • Reed leads Colorado Mesa in points per game (16.8), field-goal percentage (.579), rebounds per game (11.2) and blocked shots (41). Rowland has had a very strong freshman campaign for the Mavericks with 14.7 points per game while shooting 38% from the field.
