O’Brien Ties School Record at Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo.  Western Colorado's Choying O'Brien equaled the school record in the women's pole vault Sunday at the CSU Pueblo Last Chance Invite, clearing 3.90-meters (12 feet-9.5 inches) on her last of her three attempts at the height to tie the Mountaineers record.

O'Brien also surpassed the NCAA Provisional standard (3.75, 12-3.5) to enter her name onto the NCAA Division II national performance list.

Though he had already raced to an NCAA provisional time in the men's 1,500-meter run earlier this outdoor season, Western's Simon Kelati on Sunday improved his placement on the national performance list with a personal record time of 3 minutes, 50.58 seconds. Kelati's clocking is also the fastest on Western's outdoor performance list this spring.

Also attending the Last Chance Invite seeking to hit qualifying provisional marks were Western's Tyler Nelson and Ryan Outler.

Nelson registered a toss of 49.41 meters (162-01) on his second attempt in the men's hammer throw Sunday, shy of his season PR of 51.92m, and spun a throw of 48.33m (158-07) on his third attempt in the men's discuss, his second-best throw of the season.

Outler paced Keleti through the opening 700 meters of the 1,500, but closed out the event in 4:29.23, far off his season PR of 3:52.32 from one week ago.

Official qualifiers for the NCAA D-II national championship meet -- May 26-28 at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan -- will be announced this week.
