Mountaineers host second meet of the season

GUNNISON, Colo.  Western Colorado will look to continue their dominant start to the season on Friday, Jan. 28 when they host the Mountaineer Open & Multi in the Mountaineer Field House.

In accordance with regulations established by Western Colorado University COVID Policies and Procedures, all spectators for Western Colorado University indoor sporting events, including Paul Wright Gym and Mountaineer Field house, must wear masks regardless of vaccination status. MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND
The last time Western took to the track & field, they faced some stiff Division I competition – with the exception of MSU Denver who is in the RMAC – yet still had several athletes place in the place in the top-10 in their respective events and had multiple athletes record top-10 indoor program records.

Malcom Wesley recorded a NCAA national qualifying mark of 7.19-meters (23 feet-7.25 inches) on his wat to a first place in the men's long jump.

Eireann Donohoe took home second place in the women's triple jump, leaping to a national qualifying mark of 11.71m (38-5).

Kaiya Firor moved up to second all-time in the program's indoor top-10 list in the women's 400 meter, crossing the finish line with a time 56.61 seconds which earned her fourth-place. She also came in eighth place (25.97) in the women's 200 meter.

Sakara Harrison edged out Firor for seventh place (25.67) in the women's 200 meter and ran a 25.44 in the preliminaries which is the seventh fastest time in program history.

Choying O'Brien moved up to third all-time in the women's pole vault, with a height of 3.65m (11'11.75), earning her fifth-place.

Myia Dantzler finished sixth in the women's 60 meter with a time of 7.92.

Ja'Warren Smith posted the seventh fastest time (22.03) in program history in the men's 200 meter on his way to third-place finish. He also shined in the men's 60 meter where he came four-place crossing with a time of 6.96.

Eric Fike was not far behind Smith, coming in sixth place (7.24).

The relay teams also did well. The women's 4x400 relay (Kelia Portis, Aliyah Reimer, Harrison, Clara Tuti) came in third place, in a time of 4:04.98. While the men's 4x400 relay (Josh Hamilton, Bryce Kizewski, Sean Nicosia, Noe Garcia) crossed the finish line in sixth-place (3:25.27).

ON THE TRACK & FIELD NEXT
The Mountaineers will head to Albuquerque, N.M. next to compete in the NM Collegiate Classic on Friday, Feb. 4 through Saturday, Feb. 5.
