BOULDER, Colo. – Western State Colorado University wrapped up two days of competition at the 2018 Colorado Invitational in style on Saturday. On the weekend, Western athletes recorded five Western All-Time Top Ten performances, six NCAA DII Provisional Qualifying marks, along with numerous other personal bests.
Leading the way for Western was
Elijah Gilbert who set a new school record in the 200 meters with a blazing 21.46 clocking. His effort bested the former school-record held by Nathan Dorzwieler by nearly a tenth of a second.
Gilbert won his heat of the 200m and ultimately finished second behind former Colorado University great, Jeremy Dodson. His 21.46 clocking was the fastest collegiate mark in the field and before the add-time for altitude ties for the second-best performance in NCAA DII. In the finals of the 60 meters, Gilbert ran a 6.80 which is his second fastest performance ever. On the season, Gilbert has now run 6.85 or faster in five of seven 60 meter races.
Following the effort, Gilbert is now the Western record holder in both the 60 and 200 meter races indoors.
Joining Elijah in recording all-time top ten performances for the men was
David Moenning. Moenning recorded a collegiate-best 1:54.79, good enough for seventh all-time on the Western indoor top ten list.
It was also a particularly good day for Mountaineer women 400 meter runners. Both
Bailey Sharon and
Tianna Terrell ripped indoor personal bests and Western all-time top ten performances. Sharon's 58.67 clocking stands as the fifth best performance in Western history while Terrell's 58.87 checks-in for seventh.
If their individual performances were not enough, Sharon and Terrell teamed up with
Jessica Kresl and
Jessica Cusick and nearly bested the school record in the 4x400m relay. The foursome turned in a 3:53.98 clocking which stands as the third best indoor performance all-time at Western. Their effort brought them within half a second of the school record.
Racing in her second 3,000 meter of the season,
Sophie Seward ran a season best and Provisional Qualifying 9:58.56. Following the altitude conversion, Seward has almost certainly booked her ticket to the NCAA Championships in the 3,000m.
In the men's 3,000 meter, freshman
Taylor Stack ran a personal best of 8:30.41 which converts to a Provisional mark.
Ross Husch ran a significant personal best in the mile, clocking a 4:17.50 to finish fifth overall. Husch's altitude adjusted mark snuck him under the Provisional standard in the mile.
With qualifying performances in the running events, Western's throwers were not to be outdone.
Colby Stinson took second overall in the shot put with a 17.10m (56'1.25) heave. It's the third time this season that Stinson has thrown 17.10 or better this year. He currently sits 17
th in NCAA DII with a 17.16m effort. For the women,
Josie Harris threw a Provisional qualifying 16.74m despite being deprived of three throws in the final due to a seeding snafu.
Several Mountaineers also posted noteworthy personal bests. In the women's 800 meters, former Western soccer player
Jessica Kresl ran a personal best 2:18.59 before joining forces with her teammates in the 4x400m relay.
In addition to Gilbert's record run, the men's 200m saw two personal bests for the Mountaineers. Freshman
Angelo Minisini ran a 22.57 for near half-second personal best. Teammate,
Michael Lee also turned in a personal best of 22.84.
While Western's distance athletes will head out to the University of Washington and Grand Valley State University next weekend, Western will also be preparing to host their annual Western State High School Open on February 10
