ALAMOSA, Colo. Western Colorado Women's Basketball will travel to take on a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes this weekend. The Mountaineers will start this weekend with a challenge as they face Adams State in Alamosa, Colo., on Friday, February 16 at 5:30 p.m. Western Colorado will then make the trip to Durango, Colo., to face the gritty Fort Lewis Skyhawks on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m.
Both the Grizzlies and Skyhawks took the trip to Gunnison, Colo., this season and were able to take wins against the Mountaineers. Western Colorado fell to Adams State, 71-69 as Jayda Maves, Rachel Cockman and Natalie Jojola all scored in double figures. The Mountaineers then lost to the Skyhawks 68-47 as they shot just 33-percent from the field.
MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats
- Western Colorado (6-15, 4-12 RMAC) split their home games last weekend with an 81-63 win over Chadron State before falling to Colorado Christian 71-59. Ivey Schmidt dominated offensively for the Mountaineers last weekend, she hit a career-high 25 points on Friday night against the Eagles. On Saturday, the sophomore led her team again with 14 points offensively. Jayda Maves matched Schmidt's 25-points on Friday night for a career-high of her own, while Erika Lane was Schmidt's offensive equal Saturday night.
- As a team, the Mountaineers rank third in the conference in defensive rebounds per game (27.2) and 8th in rebounds per game (36). Offensively, Western Colorado ranks fourth in 3-pointers made per game (7.4), fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (32%), 10th in field goal percentage (38%) and 11th with 60.7 points per game.
- Maves has dominated from 3-point for the Mountaineers as she currently ranks 6th in the league in 3-point percentage (35%) through 21 games this season. The freshman ranks fifth in 3-pointers made per game 2.6 and 15th in points per game 12.6. Schmidt and Lane also impacted the Mountaineers offensive efforts, registering 10.3 and 5.8 points per game, respectively.
GRIZZLIES HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats
- Adams State (18-7, 4-12 RMAC) currently sits in third place in the RMAC standings while leading the conference in points per game (73.7) and is second in field goal percentage (43%). The Grizzlies won their most recent contest over the Skyhawks 87-61 after a 27-point second quarter gave them a 22-point lead going into half time. Kiiyani Anitelu scored 21 points for the Grizzlies, while Riahana Davis and Harmanie Dominguez also scored in double figures.
- Kayla Harris leads Adams State's offensive efforts with 9.5 points per game while shooting 42% from the field. Stephanie Ruiz has tallied 8.7 points per game this season while Angelline Nageak and Demi Black both have tallied 7.2 points per game.
- Harris also leads the Grizzlies defensively with 4.3 rebounds per game including 87 defensive rebounds. She also has recorded 67 steals which is third in the RMAC and 30 blocks. Nageak also has helped Adams State's defensive efforts with 59 steals this season.
SKYHAWKS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats
- The Skyhawks (11-12, 8-9 RMAC) are trying to snap a four-game losing streak after a loss in their midweek match up with Adams State on Tuesday. Kelsey Sorenson led Fort Lewis' scoring effort with 15 points on Tuesday night going 6-for-8 from the field. Avery Evans led the Skyhawks with six rebounds, while Sadie Misner registered four steals.
- Fort Lewis has two players averaging double digit points per game this season, Lanae Billy leads her team with 16.1 points per game, while Kelsey Sorenson has tallied 12.7 points per game. Sorenson also leads the Skyhawks in field goal percentage (46.5) among the team's starters.
- Defensively, Sorenson also leads her team with 5.4 rebounds per game and 14 total blocked shots as a Skyhawks starter. Billy leads the team in steals with 70 throughout 23 games played this season.
