GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado will return to Gunnison, Colo., for a pair of games this weekend, starting with a match up with Colorado State University Pueblo on Friday, January 19, with tip-off set for 5 p.m. The Mountaineers will then face New Mexico Highlands on Saturday, Jan. 20, starting at 3 p.m.  

The Mountaineers are looking to rebound against the ThunderWolves after falling to the Pack 61-26 on the road last season. They will also look for a win against New Mexico Highlands after a 54-49 contest last season.  

The Western Colorado Basketball programs will be honoring local hero's including police officers, firefighters, medical workers and any active and retired military members by allowing them free admission into Friday night's contests. On Saturday, make sure to come dressed in your country outfits for country night.  

MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats 

  • The Mountaineers (2-11, 0-8 RMAC) are scoring 56.7 points per game, while shooting 37% from the field. Defensively, Western Colorado is averaging 35.9 rebounds per game, which is 2.7 more than their opponents. Ivey Schmidt scored 16 points in the Mountaineers most recent game against Black Hills State, which includes eight-points in the second quarter. 

  • Rachel Cockman continues to dominate on the hardwood, scoring 16.4 points per game while making 46% of her shots from the field. Her field goal percentage ranks sixth in the conference, while she ranks seventh in the RMAC in points per game. Cockman has also been strong defensively with 8.5 rebounds per game, which ranks fifth in the league.  

  • Jayda Maves is averaging 12.1 points for the Mountaineers, shooting 37% from the field and 34% from 3-point range. Maves ranks seventh in the conference in three-point field goal percentage.  

THUNDERWOLVES HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • The ThunderWolves (10-8, 5-5 RMAC) are coming off a 20-point win over New Mexico Highlands Tuesday night. Alisha Little had a game-high 27 points, while shooting 50% from the field. She also registered 16 rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block.  

  • Little leads not only the ThunderWolves but also the conference in points per game (19.1), rebounds per game (11.6) and blocks per game (3.6). She also ranks fifth in the conference with 48-percent shooting from the field. She ranks first nationally with 64 total blocks, 208 rebounds, and 13 double-doubles this season.  

  • Tomia Johnson and Autumn Watts have also been strong defensive players for the Pack this season combining for 70 steals this season. Individually, Johnson ranks sixth in the league, with 43 total steals and ninth in the conference with 2.4 steals per game.  

COWGIRLS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • New Mexico Highlands (4-13, 3-8RMAC) are coming off a mid-week game with the ThunderWolves where Juliana Aragon, Meysa Munguia and Delani Harris all scored in double-digits on Tuesday.  

  • Aragon leads the Cowgirls offense with 11.7 points per game, while shooting 41% from the field. She has also made 32% of her shots from 3-point range and has shot over 80% from the free throw line.  

  • Aja Scott leads the Cowgirls with 99 total rebounds including 86 defensive boards this season. She also has 12 steals and five blocks throughout 16 games played.  

UP NEXT 

Western Colorado will travel to the front range next weekend to face Colorado School of Mines on Friday, Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m., and Metropolitan State University of Denver at 3:30 p.m. The Mountaineers will return home to face Colorado Mesa in a mid-week contest on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m.
