Aldrich breaks school record, Mountaineers crowned champs in women’s and men’s 3,000m

ALAMOSA, Colo. Western Colorado had a a school record broken again and two more champions in the women's and men's 3,000m on the final day of the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships – finishing with a total of five first team all-conference performances and ten second team all-conference performances on the final day.

As a whole, the women and men finished in fourth-place, with the women having 83.5-points and the men having 79-points.

The top-three finishers in each event are named all-conference first-team selections, while the fourth, fifth and sixth-place finishers are tabbed all-conference second-team. For relay events, the first-place team is named to the first team and the second-place team is named to the second team.

FIRST TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE
  • True freshman Tyler Nord became a champion in the men's 3,000m cruising across the finish line in a NCAA DII Provisional qualifying time of 7:57.34.
  • Similar to Nord, Katie Doucette earned herself the top spot on the podium beating her competition in the women's 3,000m with a time of 10:02.34.
  • Kaiya Firor had a stellar performance in the women's 400m, coming in second-place in a time of 57.54 to earn herself first team all-conference. Firor also earned second team all-conference honors in the 200m, coming in fifth-place in a season best time of 25.49.
  • Clearing a NCAA DII provisional qualifying height of 1.72m (5-07.75), Sammie Bretz earned first team all-conference honors and a second-place finish. That mark also moves her to fourth all-time.
  • Earning her second all-conference honor of the 2023 RMAC indoor championships, Eireann Donohoe came in third-place in the women's triple jump with a distance of 11.68m (38-04.00). Donohoe also came in seventh-place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.61m (5-03.25).
SECOND TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE
  • The men's 4x400m relay team – Ja'Warren Smith, Ethan Coyhis, DJ Allen Jr, Kennedy Martinez – moved to fifth all-time and earned second team all-conference honors, by crossing the finish line in second-place in a season best time of 3:18.20.
  • Ali Aldrich broke her own school record for the fourth time this season in the women's shot put, with a provisional qualifying heave of 15:09m (49-06.25). That mark earned her third-place and her second first team all-conference honor.
  • Allison Beasley represented Western well in the women's 3,000m, earning second team all-conference honors coming in fourth-place in a time of 10:10.97.
  • In the men's triple jump, Ismael Dembele earned himself second team all-conference honors with a provisional qualifying leap of 14.66m (48-01.25). That mark earned him fifth-place and improved his ninth all-time mark.
  • Moving to fifth all-time in the men's 60m, Ja'Warren Smith earned second team all-conference honors by crossing the finish line in a season best time of 6.83, which earned him fifth-place.
  • Crossing the finish line in fifth-place in the men's mile, Patrick Jirele earned himself second team all-conference honors with a provisional qualifying time of 4:20.99.
  • Ethan Coyhis joined the list of Mountaineers to earn second team all-conference honors, by coming in fifth-place in the men's 800m with a provisional qualifying time of 1:51.52.
  • In the women's 400m, Kelia Portis earned the women's team three-points by coming in sixth-place (59.16).
  • Cora Olson earned a second team all-conference honor in the women's triple jump by leaping to a season best mark of 11.11m (36-05.50), earning her sixth-place. Olsen also recorded a season best time in the women's 200m, Cora Olson crossing the finish line in seventh-place (25.94).
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
  • The women's 4x400m relay – Portis, Kiarra Lapp, Sakara Harrison, Emma Kjellsen – crossed the finish line in a time of 3:58.85, which earned them fourth-place.
  • Jacob Stroup and Sam Burns scored for the Mountaineers in the men's 60m hurdles, coming in seventh (8.43) and eighth-place (8.45).
  • Earning a few points for Western, Ryan Outler and Aidan Scott finished in seventh (4:22.35) and eighth-place (4:23.38) in the men's mile. Additionally, Scott time is a provisional qualifying time after being converted to 4:09.10 for track size (banked/oversized) and altitude.
  • Jeremy Killoy helped out the men's team by coming in eighth-place in men's 800m (1:58.22).
  • Earning provisional qualifying times in the women's 800m, Emma Kjellsen crossed the finish line in seventh-place (2:13.81) and Lauren Willson came in at a time of 2:16.58. That time also moves Kjellsen to eighth all-time.
  • Leah Taylor earned a few points for Western, coming in seventh place (5:11.01) in the women's mile.

The Mountaineers will now wait to see who will be going to the NCAA DIvision II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Virginia Beach, Va, which will take place on March 10 (Fri.) through March 11 (Sat.)
