Weiss Races to All-America Honor in 1,500

EMPORIA, Kan.  Peyton Weiss on Saturday afternoon, the final day of the 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, ran to an All-American honor in the women's 1,500-meter run, circling the oval at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State (Kan.) University to earn a seventh-place finish.

Weiss crossed the finish with a time of 4 minutes, 22.03 seconds, less than 75/100ths of a second behind the fifth-place finisher.TF-NCAA-Day3-260523-W1500-podium-Weiss_01860

In the final individual men's event at the meet, Western's Tyler Nord placed ninth, one spot from All-America recognition, in the men's 5,000m run, posting a time of 14:16.78.

Weiss started her All-American run from the far outside at the start, moving from the outside of the 12 runners to within the top four by the end of the first curve.

She slid to the back third of the field over the next two laps, temporarily getting boxed in in ninth place. But she worked her way off the rail around the penultimate curve and slid past one competitor down the backstretch, claiming one more place down the homestretch to earn her spot on the podium.

Nord hung toward the back of the pack of 22 runners in his race before moving up into the top 12 with 1,600 meters to go.

With 800 left, two more circuits of the track, he began to move up, leading the second pack of runners after the lead pack had broken away.

With only the final lap remaining he kept the lead of the second pack, holding on to ninth place but unable to narrow the gap to the front pack of eight runners.

Weiss and Nord completed Western's appearance at the national meet, which produced All-Americans in Weiss on Saturday and in Jan Thewes in the men's 3,000m steeplechase Friday evening.
