BOULDER, Colo. Western Colorado's
Eireann Donohoe and
Malcom Wesley each posted NCAA provisional marks in their respective events Saturday at the CU Invitational, hosted by the University of Colorado on Friday and Saturday at its Potts Field facility.
Donohoe won the women's triple jump event with a leap of 11.97 meters (39 feet-3.25 inches) and moving up to 19th on the outdoor NCAA Division II performance list. Her jump is fifth on the program's all-time list in the event.
Wesley, an indoor All-American in the men's long jump, placed second at the Invitational, surpassing the provisional mark with a best leap of 7.33m (24-00.75), which moves him up to sixth in program history.
In addition to his second-place finish in the long jump, Wesley also finished second in the triple jump (14.54m, 47-08.5).
The Mountaineer pole vaulters almost brought home event titles.
Laura Brignoli and
Choying O'Brien equaled the event-winner's height, 3.50m (11-05.75), but Kayla Stibley of University of Wyoming earned first place by reaching that height in fewer attempts and fewer misses. Brignoli – who improved her outdoor best and moved up from seventh in program history into a tie for sixth best – placed second and O'Brien was third.
In addition,
Lauren Smith (3.35m, 10-11.75) earned a fifth-place finish to help the Mountaineer women take three of the top five spots.
In the men's pole vault,
Kyle Yonker cleared 4.85m (15-11.00) to take second place in the event.
A little closer to the ground but in the other vertical jump, Western's
Sammie Bretz (1.65m, 5-5.00) earned third place in the women's high jump, while
Dominic Anselmo (1.86m, 6-01.25) tied for ninth place in the men's high jump.
Another highlight in the field events was
Tyler Nelson's eighth-place finish Friday in the men's hammer throw. Nelson registered a best toss of 51.32m (168-04) and moved into 10th place in the program's top-10 list. He also placed seventh (50.38m, 165-03) Friday in the javelin, and 13th (43.60m, 143-00) Saturday in the discus.
On the oval, the Mountaineer 4x100m relay quartet of
Amaya Booker,
Shynesti Johnson,
Mikayla Hutchison and
Myia Dantzler combined for a third-place finishing time of 47.01 seconds that is fourth fastest in program history.
Booker (25.77) and Hutchison (26.04) placed fifth and sixth, respectively in the women's 200m dash.
In the next-longest sprint, Western's
Josh Hamilton placed fourth in the men's 400 (49.31) and
Mackenzie Burt was fifth (56.24) in the women's 400, moving up one spot to sixth on Western's top-10 list. Hamilton later added a 10th-place finish (22.90) in the men's 200.
Another almost-winner for Western came on the straightaway as
Jacob Stroup placed second in the 110m high hurdles, crossing the finish with a time of 14.76 seconds.
In the longest hurdle event,
Patrick Jirele was fifth (9:43.79) in the men's 3,000m steeplechase.
Western will advance into a busy week after the CU Invitational, as part of the team will head to Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University for the April 13-15 Bryan Clay Invitational, a different group will participate in the April 15-16 Maverick Multi & Open at Colorado Mesa University, and some of the team will be at the Beach Invitational on April 16 at Long Beach State (Calif.) University.
