GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado track and field team continued their impressive streak of earning a provisional qualifying mark and having an athlete earn a top-10 indoor record on Friday, Feb. 18 when they competed in the Western Colorado Alumni Open.
- Choying O'Brien kept another streak going for the women's pole vaulters – fourth week a pole vaulter has recorded a top-10 indoor mark - breaking her indoor school record and earning a provisional qualifying mark, clearing a height of 12 feet-5.25 inches.
- In the women's 400m Mackenzie Burt moved to seventh all-time coming in first in 58.41 seconds.
- Myia Dantzler and Kelia Portis also came in first place in their respective events. In the women's 200m Dantzler crossed the finish line with a time of 25.68 and Portis in the 60m hurdles beat her competitors posting a time of 9.39.
- Gretchen Slattum was the final runner to win her event, dusting her opponents in the one mile (5:20.80).
- In the field events Raquel Moore and Krystal Wortham dominated in their events both recording a first-place finish. Moore flew through the air an landed at a mark of 5.29m (17-04.25) in the long jump. In the weight throw, Wortham gave it all she had, throwing the weight 16.13m (52-11) in the weight throw.
- Additionally, while Laura Brignoli didn't finish first in the women's pole vault, she improved to ninth all-time clearing a height of 3.49m (11-05.25).
- Seven men shined above the rest in their respective event on Friday (Feb. 18). However, one Mountaineer stood out over the others.
- Cade Michael stood out for the men, earning the lone provisional qualifying mark for the group coming in first place in the men's 3000-meter in a time of 8:38.73.
- In the men's high jump Carter Auer cleared a height of 1.96m (6'5"), earning him first place.
- Fellow jumpers Ismael Dembele and Malcom Wesley also won their event, Dembele leaping to a mark of 14.21m (46-07.5) in the triple jump, while Wesley record a distance of 6.86m (22-06.25)
- The final field athlete who had a good outing was Kyle Yonker, who was the only athlete to clear a height of 4.73m (15-06.25) in the pole vault.
- For the runners, Ja'Warren Smith blazed down the track and crossed the finish line first in a time of 51.13. Similar to Smith, Jacob Stroup duplicated that success in the 60m hurdle with a time of 8.34.
- Last and certainly not least, Logan Butterfield joined the top-10 indoor record list, with a toss of 15.55m (51-00.25) in the men's weight throw moving him to 10th all-time.
