T&F | Stinson's school record leads Western at Tailwind Open

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Mountaineers were enchanted on Saturday at the Don Kirby Tailwind Open held by the University of New Mexico. Colby Stinson's school record, provisional qualifying, personal best bomb in the men's shot put led a day filled with provisional qualifying marks.

Throughout the day, Western posted five NCAA DII Provisional Qualifying marks, six Western All-Time Top Ten performances, and numerous personal bests.

Two Mountaineer men led the way as the aforementioned Stinson and David Moenning highlighted for Western.

After a solid start to his series of throws, Stinson stepped into the ring for his sixth attempt and unleashed a mighty heave. On the tape, Stinson's throw would go down as a new school record of 17.70 meters (58'1"). It was Stinson's first time over 58 feet and a personal best by nearly a foot and a half. He currently leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference by nearly 60 centimeters. The effort should all but ensure his position at the NCAA Championships in May as he currently sits 5th on the NCAA DII performance list.

On the track, David Moenning had a breakout performance for Western in his young career. Moenning's pedigree shown through for Western as he turned in a 1:51.62 over 800 meters to finish as the first collegian in the field and second overall. The clocking was a collegiate personal best for Moenning and landed him 8th All-Time in the Western record books. Following the altitude conversion, Moenning is the 10th fastest man in NCAA DII over 800 meters.

Joining their teammates with Provisional performances, both Ross Husch and Sophie Seward recorded personal bests and Provisional qualifying performances in the 1,500 meters.

In his winning effort, Husch recorded a 3:55.99 performance for a personal best to lead his team to the line. Following the altitude conversion, Husch's performance moves to 3:50.59 good enough for 14th on the NCAA DII performance list.

Stepping down in distance, long distance specialist Sophie Seward turned in a sterling performance in the 1,500 meters. Finishing second overall, Seward ran a seven second personal best to establish a Provisional Qualifying performance in the event before returning her focus to the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.

In the pole vault, Colin Borner got back on track with 4.83 meter (15'10") leap. The height was a Provisional Qualifying performance and improved on his outdoor personal best. Borner sits 5th All-Time at Western after the effort.

While a slew of Mountaineers recorded personal bests, two women earned new bests in two separate events, landing themselves on the Western All-Time lists in the process.

In her second meet for Western, Haley Vinson tallied personal bests in both the long and triple jump. In the long jump, Vinson launched a 5.37 meter (17' 7.5") leap for a lifetime best. But Vinson was more impressive in her priority event, the triple jump. Following the last jump, best jump mantra Vinson popped an 11.43 meter (37'6") jump for a new personal best. It only took Vinson a dozen jumps before she landed in the Western record books as the 8th best performer all-time despite not jumping for three years.

Continuing her development in the hurdles, freshman Chelsey Murphy ran a new personal best of 14.61 in the 100 meter hurdles to move to 4th All-Time. If that wasn't enough, Murphy also ran a personal best in the 100 meters of 12.38 – just a tenth of a second off of 10th All-Time at Western.

Back on the track, Casey Lewis ripped a 47.75 clocking in the 400 meters for a new personal best. Lewis' first time eclipsing the 48 second barrier landed him as the fourth fastest performer all-time at Western.

The 400 meters was a productive event for Western as two other men recorded personal bests. Jarin Donaldson inched under his previous best with a 50.86 effort.

In a breakout effort at the distance, Kevin Vargas recorded a 50.91 before also running a personal best of 22.87 into a headwind in the 200 meters.

Xavier Bishop-Falu recorded a personal best of 14.97 in the 110 meter hurdles. Bishop-Falu's first time under 15 seconds came on the heels of Kyree Gerstle-Goodman's 14.77 winning effot.

Two other Western women recorded personal bests as Khayla Doublin ran 12.44 in the 100 meters and Cassidy Ahrens ran a personal best of 4:54.85 in the 1,500 meters.

Closing out the meet, the Western women ran 3:55.79 in the 4x400 meter relay for the 7th fastest performance in Western history.
