LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Western track and field closed out their West Coast tour at the Beach Invite hosted by Long Beach State University on Saturday. The Mountaineers got it done across event groups at the Beach Invite, recording Provisional Qualifying marks on the track and in the field.
Setting the tone for the day, Alicja and
Aneta Konieczek got down to business Saturday morning in the 1,500 meters.
Just a night's sleep removed from an Automatic Qualifying performance in the 5,000 meters, Alicja got back to work in the 1,500 meters. Running in the fastest section, she posted a 4:23.71 season's best effort that is currently the 6
thbest performance in NCAA DII.
Running in section two,
Aneta Konieczek also posted a season's best after setting the NCAA DII leading mark in the steeplechase on Friday night. Aneta's 4:29.45 clocking was a Provisional Qualifying performance and also moved her into ninth on the Western All-Time Top Ten list.
Out in the shot put ring, things were also heating up for the Mountaineers. In the men's shot put,
Colby Stinson launched a 17.40 meter (57'01) throw for a Provisional performance. The throw was the second furthest of Stinson's career trailing only his school record heave that qualified him for the NCAA Championship. In the women's shot,
Lovina Akauola continued her recent success, unloading a 13.27 meter (43-06.50) put.
On the pole vault runway,
Colin Borner found his form and posted an outdoor personal best of 4.90 meters (16'0.75). The leap was Borner's first time over sixteen feet in his outdoor career and the effort put him into a tie for 20
thon the DII performance list.
A day after breaking the school record,
Casey Lewis recorded a 47.32 in the 400 meters finishing just two-tenths behind his school record performance. After the weekend, Lewis is now the 10
thbest performer in DII over 400 meters.
Two other Mountaineers posted season best marks at the Beach Invite.
Running in the 400 meters,
Jenice Whitehead finished in 56.76. That effort places Whitehead second in the RMAC.
After an early season layoff,
Elijah Gilbert recorded a season best effort in the 100 meters with a 10.61 clocking. Gilbert's run was just two-hundredths of a second off the Provisional Qualifying standard and moved him into first amongst RMAC competitors.
Following the long trip home, the Mountaineers will begin their preparation for the RMAC Championships starting on April 27
th.
