WBB | Mountaineers host Hardrockers this Saturday

GUNNISON, Colo. – Three games remain for Western State Colorado University women's basketball this season. The Mountaineers host South Dakota School of Mines & Technology this Saturday at 7 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym for the first of those three games.

With three games left in the regular season, Western (6-17, 5-14 RMAC) sits four games behind Black Hills State University in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings. This means the Mountaineers will be unable to make the conference tournament this season.

However, Western can still jump from 13th place to ninth place in the standings with three wins to end the season.

The Mountaineers are coming off an impressive 80-71 win over rival Adams State University last Saturday on the road.

Western point guard, Brianna Wilber leads the Mountaineers in scoring, averaging 8.6 points per game. Wilber also leads the team in assists, averaging 1.7 per game.

SDSMT (10-14, 8-11 RMAC) is three games ahead of the Mountaineers in the conference standings. The Hardrockers are tied for 10th in the RMAC standings with three games left in the regular season.

The Hardrockers enter Saturday's game after losing to rival BHSU 61-57 on the road last week.

Megan Rohrer leads SDSMT in scoring, averaging 10.2 points per game.

Western and the Hardrockers played just three weeks ago in Rapid City, South Dakota. SDSMT came away with a 53-37 win over the Mountaineers. Western has yet to defeat the Hardrockers since they joined the RMAC last season.

Saturday night is also Pink Night for the Mountaineers as they participate in a Play4Kay event. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to support the Mountaineers as they help raise awareness and money for cancer research.

During the final stages of her battle with cancer, Olympic and Naismith Hall of Fame Coach, Kay Yow, had a vision to unite coaches, players, and the women's basketball community to do something for the greater good that would far exceed wins and losses.

Because of financial support from PLAY4KAY events across the country, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund has awarded over $5.28 million for scientific research and projects assisting the underserved in ALL women's cancers.

During warmups, both the Western men and women will be warming up in special pink t-shirts. These shirts will then be up for silent auction during both games on Saturday with proceeds going to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

The women's basketball team is also selling pink Mountaineer knit hats all week, leading up to Saturday's games. To purchase a hat or donate, please contact Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Stephanie Gehlhausen (970-943-2423, sgehlhausen@western.edu). With the purchase of a knit hat, you will also receive free admission to the game and a free bag of popcorn. Just bring the hat to the game.
