ALAMOSA, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's basketball heads South for the weekend for two road games against Adams State University and Fort Lewis College. Friday, the Mountaineers play Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Adams State at 5:30 p.m. in Plachy Hall. Western turns around Saturday to play #20 Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado.
Heading into the second weekend of the RMAC schedule, Western (3-5, 0-2 RMAC) looks for their first conference wins. A young Western team has dealt with injuries and illness early in the season while rotating on the court leadership week-to-week. For the Mountaineers, four freshman have shared the scoring load.
Defensively, Western has a strong presence in the key and on the perimeter.
Katie Dalton currently sits as the fourth best shot blocker in the RMAC with 11 rejections on the season. Teammate,
Tammarrah Gothard leads the RMAC in steals averaging three per game for a season total of 24. Dual threat
Jessie Erickson also factors into the statistically top five in the RMAC while serving as the second leading scorer for the Mountaineers.
Against Adams State (2-2, 0-2 RMAC) Western finds a team averaging 70.5 points per game but with a low margin. Despite putting up points, the Grizzlies are allowing 69.7 points per game. Adams enters the weekend on a two-game slide. Throughout the early stages of the season, Western and Adams do have a common opponent in Northern New Mexico College. Western topped NMCC 73-57 while Adams fell 80-86 at home.
Saturday, Western faces a tough Fort Lewis (6-1, 1-1 RMAC) team whose only loss has come at the hands of the RMAC leading CSU-Pueblo. Early in the season Fort Lewis ran rough shod over a slew of Lonestar Conference challengers before staring the RMAC schedule. The Skyhawks play stingy defense, allowing only 47 points per game. Fort Lewis is led by multi-dimensional threat, and reigning RMAC Defensive player of the Week, Vivian Gray. Gray averages 15.4 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 4.1 Assists, and has 15 blocks on the season. Astrea Reed also averages double-digit scoring for the Skyhawks.
