VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. The Mountaineer track and field team kicked off day one of the 2026 Indoor National Championships on Friday afternoon with several strong performances and a spot secured in Saturday's finals.
Tyler Nord was the first Mountaineer to take the track, competing in the men's mile. Nord ran a strong race, finishing in 4:10.26 to place 14th overall, just outside the top eight. His performance earned him Second Team All-American honors.
The women's mile followed with
Peyton Weiss and
Emma Kjellsen representing the Mountaineers. Weiss competed in the first heat, finishing ninth with a time of 5:10.18. While she finished just outside the top eight, Weiss closed out her indoor career by earning All-American Honorable Mention honors.
Kjellsen ran in the second heat and delivered an outstanding performance, blazing to a personal-best time of 4:48.32. Her mark improved her previous best by four seconds and moved her up to seventh all-time in program history in the mile. Kjellsen placed fourth in her heat and secured the seventh overall qualifying spot, advancing to Saturday's finals. With her qualification, she also clinched First Team All-American status and will return to the track tomorrow afternoon to compete for a national title in the women's mile final.
Oliver Diaz then took the track in the men's 5,000-meter run. Diaz turned in a strong effort, finishing 14th with a time of 14:08.28 to earn Second Team All-American honors.
Later in the evening, the men's distance medley relay team of Wyatt Hoover,
Will Stone,
Gable Rial, and
Tyler Nord competed in the final event window of the day. The group finished 11th with a time of 9:59.26, earning Second Team All-American honors. Their time ranks eighth best in program history.
The Mountaineers wrapped up day one with the women's distance medley relay. The team of
Emma Kjellsen,
Alissa Rall,
Peyton Weiss, and
Lauren Willson finished seventh with a time of 11:34.61, marking the fourth-fastest performance in school history. Their seventh place finish earned them First Team All-American status.Â
