GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado is chasing from behind a coveted Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's basketball postseason tournament spot, making the two upcoming games vital for the Mountaineers, who are two games behind the final and eighth spot in the current standings.
THE HISTORY
- Westminster ended a three-game losing streak to the Mountaineers with a Jan. 17 win this year in Salt Lake City. All time, the Griffins are 19-7 against Western.
- The long history between Mesa and the Mountaineers dates back to 1978, and since then, the Mavericks have compiled an all-time record of 68-26 against Western, which last defeated CMU on Jan. 30, 2021.
WESTERN COLORADO HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2025-26 Stats
- The Mountaineers, 8-16 overall and 6-10 in the RMAC, have won two of its last three games to vault into the discussion of a berth in the RMAC tournament.
- In its last outing, Western took the lead over visiting Fort Lewis at 32-30 on a Quincy Scott 3-pointer, and never trailed again to earn a split of the season series with the Skyhawks.
- Mountaineer scoring is led by the trio of Aidan McDowell, Tyler Halligan and Jordan Kuac. McDowell's 27.0 PPG leads all DII players, and is 81 3-pointers are tied for seventh most nationally.
- Halligan adds 12.0 PPG along with 4.9 RPG, while Kuac adds 10.6 PPG and 4.8 RPG.
- Mason Mottashed is the chief distributor of the rock in the offensive end, his 95 assists ranking sixth within his RMAC peers.
- The Mountaineers are second in the league in free throw percentage, hitting 77% and trailing only Colorado Mesa's 81%. The sharp-shooting McDowell's 89.5% from the line ranks 14th nationally.
WESTMINSTER HEADING INTO THE GAME | 2025-26 Stats
- The Griffins come into Thursday on a two-game win streak, while posting an 11-14 overall record and a 6-11 RMAC mark.
- Westminster gets help from all over its roster, starting with Colin Hayes' 13.0 PPG. The majority of his points come from inside the arc, while Cole Kadoguchi's come from outside the 3-point line as he has a total of 61 three pointers and his 43% shooting from long range is 22nd in DII.
- The team's leading rebounder, Michael Frazier, pulls down an average of 3.6 RPG while contributing 12.7 PPG.
- And setting it all up is Jake Nadauld (9.0 PPG), who has dispersed 100 assists on the season, second most in the RMAC.
COLORADO MESA COMING INTO THE GAME | 2025-26 Stats
- The Mavericks, 17-8 overall and 13-4 in the RMAC, had a seven-game win streak snapped it its most recent game, a loss to host Westminster.'
- Its winning record can be attributed to a +5 scoring margin on the year as well as a +5 rebounding margin.
- The Mavs are a bang-up team rather than a long-range shooting squad, with just 197 triples this season, a figure that ranks only 11th statistically in that category.
- CMU gets a lot out of redshirt senior Ty Allred. He leads the team in scoring (18.6 PPG) rebounding (7.7 RPG) and from behind the arc with a total of 50 treys.
- Don't go to sleep on Harvey White who adds 10.6 PPG while dishing out a team-high 87 assists.
MOUNTAINEER SENIOR
- The program will recognize in a pre-game ceremony senior Christian Still.
- Injured early this season, Still played in a total of 59 games during his career, amassing 756 minutes of court action.
- He finishes his career with 268 points, 98 rebounds and 18 steals. His high-point game came against visiting Fort Lewis on Jan. 9, 2025, when he scored 25 points. And off the glass, his single-game career high of 8 rebounds came a year earlier on Feb. 24, 2024, against visiting UC Colorado Springs.
