SEATTLE, Wash., ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Western Colorado's track and field program split and headed in two different directions for the weekend, with both locations producing new bests for several Mountaineers on Friday.
In Seattle at the Husky Classic, four runners from the distance group raced to NCAA Division II provisional times.
In the men's 5,000-meter run, and in a field filled with Division I runners, Western's
Oliver Diaz placed fourth overall in a time of 13 minutes, 51.86 seconds. That time surpassed the DII provisional standard and enters the rest of the weekend as the 10th fastest time in the event in DII.
Allison Beasley finished 24th in the women's 5,000, also earning a provisional mark with her time of 16:59.90, which ranks 29th on the DII provisional list.
The women's 3,000 added two more provisionals for Western as
Lauren Willson clocked a time, 9:30.47, that is 10th on the DII performance list while
Peyton Weiss' time of 9:33.73 ranks 12th in DII.
The group that went South to the Don Kirby Elite Invite at the University of New Mexico produced several season-best results.
Jayda Nix and
Annaka Rudolph placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women's 3,000, Nix crossing the finish with a season best of 10:10.72 while Rudolph added a season best time of 10:11.67.
Also on the track with a season best was
Arvell Amos in the men's 200m dash, sprinting to a time of 22.09 seconds.
Field events provided the other season bests from Mountaineers in Albuquerque.
In the men's high jump, Branon Kolb placed sixth with a season best height of 2.03 meters (6 feet-8.00 inches), while in the women's high jump,
Nykole Meshew cleared a season best of 1.61m (5-3.25) and
Addisyn Sweeney added a season best of 1.56m (5-1.25) for herself.
Austin John scored a 15th place finish in the men's weight throw, registering a season-long toss of 16.45m (53-11.75).
The Seattle group will return home to Western, but the Albuquerque group will finish the Elite Invite at UNM on Saturday.
