GUNNISON, Colo. Mountaineer wrestling's annual weekend hosting the Western Colorado Open and the Tracy Borah Duals has arrived, with the Open scheduled for Friday, Jan. 9 and the 35th Duals set for Saturday, Jan. 10, with both events taking place in the Mountaineer Field House.
The Open on Friday is composed mostly of attending team's redshirts and reserved, giving those programs attending the Duals the opportunity to bring whole squads for high level competition.
Named after legendary wrestling coach Tracy Borah, the event in 2026 includes a pair of ranked teams (NWCA rankings) and nearly a dozen wrestlers who have individual national rankings in the NWCA Division II lists.
Western Colorado comes into the Duals with a 3-1 record and a wrestler,
Vincent Cabral, who ranks 11th in the NWCA 157-pound rankings.
Two of the Mountaineers' wins came during their early-season San Fransisco trip where they downed Vanguard University and host S.F. State. The most recent victory came in a non-conference dual Dec. 4 at No. 18 Colorado Mesa, with heavyweight
Riley Butt clinching the 21-17 rally with a first-period fall.
Western closed out the fall semester with a 22nd place at the Midwest Classic, then opened 2026 with a 4th-place finish and Butt's individual championship at the 13th Jet Open in Wichita, Kan.
The Mountaineers are scheduled to take on Minot (N.D.) State, Cal Poly Humboldt, Vanguard, and Menlo (Calif.) College during the Duals.
Minot State (4-2) heads into the weekend off a 32-18 victory over Jamestown, with both losses coming right before in duals against No. 9 St. Cloud State and No. 14 UMary.
Humboldt is 5-2 after a 5-0 start to the season. One of the wins in its fast start was a 30-15 victory over then-No. 20 S.F. State. The Lumberjacks' two defeats were against Colorado State Pueblo (30-11), and to Southern Oregon (19-17).
Vanguard is 2-3 entering the Open and the Duals. In addition to its loss to Western, the Lions also dropped a 25-10 dual against Menlo. Their two victories came at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas, Nev., where they downed Division III programs from Pacific (Ore.) University and Manchester (Ind.) University.
Menlo, the 2024-25 NCWA Nationals team champion, is 3-1 this season with wins against Western, Vanguard, and Concordia-Wisconsin. The Oaks also claimed one individual champion at the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Mile High Open.
Other programs participating in the Tracy Borah Duals include No. 16 Adams State, No. 18 Colorado Mesa, and CSU Pueblo.
Individuals within the NWCA rankings that are likely to compete during the Duals include:
- 125 pounds: No. 3 Isaiah Gomez (Adams State)
