Devin Gomez earned a win in his second and third matches at the 2026 NCAA Division II Men's Wrestling Championship on Friday, but a loss in his next bout ended his stay at the event in the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
The No. 6 seed in the 125-pound bracket, Gomez was upset in the first round by Nic Allison of Kutztown (Pa.) University.
The loss pushed him into the left side of the bracket where he was able to earn a 5-1 decision in a consolation preliminary match to stay alive in the tournament.
Battling with Bryson Humphries of Drury (Mo.) University, the pair worked through a scoreless opening period. Gomez deferred to Humphries to start the second with Humpries choosing bottom and earning an escape 34 seconds in to inch ahead, 1-0.
The period finished that way, and the third started with Gomez choosing the down position to start.
He tied the score with an escape after just 10 seconds, then midway through the period earned a takedown of Humphries to take the lead.
The period ended with Gomez still in control and earning a riding time point for a 5-1 decision that advanced him in the consolation bracket.
He went up against Nathan Smith of the University of Indianapolis next but fell behind by a takedown in the first minute.
Late in the period Smith was assessed a penalty, getting Gomez on the scoreboard with a point and with the period winding down he engineered a reversal to pull even at 3-3.
Neither scored in the second period, and entering the third Gomez had choice and began in the bottom position.
Smith held control adding up riding time but in the final minute Gomez worked a reversal to move ahead. Even though Smith earned the riding time point, Gomez would earn a 5-4 decision to advance one more round.
His appearance at the national tournament would end in the next match, though, as Logan Davis of West Liberty would build a 7-1 lead before earning a third period pin.
Gomez finishes the 2025-26 season with an overall record of 23-9.
