GOLDEN, Colo. The Western Colorado track and field team on Saturday finished off the two-day Mines Winter Classic & Multi at the Colorado School of Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse, earning a pair of first place finishes and two results posting in Western's all-time top-10 lists.
After
Austin John on Friday posted the 10th-longest shot put in Mountaineer history, he placed fourth Saturday in the men's weight throw with a heave of 15.96 meters (52 feet-4.5 inches) that landed just shy of Western's top 10 in the event.
The sprint straightaway at the Fieldhouse produced fast results for several Mountaineers, beginning with
Myia Dantzler's win in the women's 60m dash. Her time of 7.57 seconds is second all-time in Western history.
The same distance, but with the hurdles in place, produced another Mountaineer first place in
Iris Hicks' victory in the women's 60m hurdles as she broke the tape in a time of 9.70 seconds.
In the men's 60m hurdles,
Joseph Purbrick placed second with a time, 8.21 seconds, that ranks eighth on Western's top-10 indoor list.
Adding to Western's strong performances in the field events were
Shawn Carter in the men's triple jump and
Nykole Meshew and
Kyla Wolitzky in the women's high jump.
Carter posted a mark of 14.58m (47-10) to take second place in the men's triple jump.
In the women's high jump, Meshew tied for first place, clearing a height of 1.60m (5-3) with Wolitzky taking third at 1.55m (5-1).

Western will be sending representatives to compete in the Colorado Classic in Boulder, Colo., at the Ford Practice Facility on Feb. 7.
