GUNNISON, Colo. Women's basketball will be splitting the week into home and away Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests, hosting 10th-ranked Colorado Mesa on Tuesday night before traveling to Westminster (Utah) University for a Saturday afternoon game.
THE HISTORY
- Colorado Mesa has compiled a 60-14 record all time against Western, and are on a five-game winning streak over the Mountaineers. Western's most recent win was a 61-60 victory in Grand Junction on Jan. 28, 2023.
- Westminster also owns an edge in its series with Western, 16-9, but the Mountaineers have won four straight against the Griffins, including a sweep of the two-game series last season.
WESTERN COLORADO HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2025-26 Stats
- At 4-2 in league play, Western is tied for fourth place in the RMAC standings with four other teams. The Mountaineers are 6-6 overall.
- Ivey Schmidt continues to lead the conference in scoring at 19.7 PPG, while her 7.3 RPG ranks fourth in the RMAC.
- Jayda Maves (12.5 PPG) is fifth in the league with 30 3-pointers, followed by Schmidt's 24 triples.
- The Mountaineers are third in the league in rebounding margin, +6.4, led by Schmidt and Penelope Urquhart (6.3 RPG).
- An aggressive approach to the basket has been a good recipe for success for the Mountaineers as they have won all but one game when stepping to the free throw line more than their opponents. Alyssa Eckroth leads the team at the stripe, shooting 79% (49-of-62) in her trips to the line.
- Cleaning up things in the turnover department is still an area to be worked on, as Western is minus-5.2 in overall turnover margin, with opponents averaging 16.5 PPG from Western's 17.7 turnovers each contest.
No. 10 COLORADO MESA HEADING INTO THE GAME | 2025-26 Stats
- The Mavericks are a perfect 6-0 in league action heading into Tuesday's game, and their lone loss within a 16-1 overall record came early in the season at West Texas A&M.
- CMU plays a hounding, challenging defense against opponents, limiting them to an average of just 53 points per game, while the Mavs average 75 PPG, and a field goal percentage of just 33 percent. The rebounding advantage also heavily tilts CMU's way, with a +11 margin off the glass.
- Two players, Olivia Reed Thyne and Mason Rowland are the most dangerous scorers for the Mavs, averaging 19.4 and 16.6 PPG, respectively. Reed Thyne is also the team's rebounding leader, averaging nearly 11 per game.
- Rowland is the outside shooter to watch for, dropping in a team-high 38 3-pointers, while also dishing out 60 assists, second in helpers only to Mykaela Moore's 61 assists.
WESTMINSTER HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2025-26 Stats
- The Griffins are looking for their first RMAC win of the season, heading into a Thursday road game at No. 10 Colorado Mesa at 0-6 in league play. At 3-9 overall, Westminster earned wins over Alaska-Fairbanks and Texas A&M Kingsville at the Griffins' own tournament earlier in the season, and then just before the holiday break it downed Seattle Pacific.
- Since that win, Westminster has lost three straight, including RMAC losses to Adams State and Fort Lewis in early January.
- More than half of the scoring, the team averaging 63 PPG, comes from the trio of Teuila Nawahine (12.6 PPG), Ellie Mitchell (12.2) and Madison Anderson (11.7).
- Mitchell is the long-range threat with 20 triples this season, while Nawahine is also the team's assist leader with 39.
- Emily Evans leads off the glass with 7.0 RPG with Anderson next at 6.5 RPG.
UP NEXT
The Mountaineers are at home next week with a pair of RMAC games, starting with a Thursday visit from South Dakota Mines and a Saturday game against Black Hills State.
