GUNNISON, Colo.  Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's basketball action continues for Western Colorado this week as they are set to host Colorado Mesa on Tuesday night then travel to Salt Lake City to take on Westminster (Utah) University for a Saturday afternoon game.

THE HISTORY
  • The long history between Colorado Mesa and Western sees the Mavs with an overall advantage 67-26. The Mountaineers' most recent win in the series (78-72) was a home victory on Jan. 30, 2021.
  • Westminster posts an 18-7 overall record against Western, but the Mountaineers have won the last three meetings including a sweep of the two-game series last season.
WESTERN COLORADO HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2025-26 Stats
  • The Mountaineers enter the weekend with a 3-3 RMAC mark and an overall record of 5-9. They opened the conference slate at 3-1, but dropped a pair of road games last week to even their conference record at .500.
  • Aidan McDowell continues to lead the conference and NCAA Division II in scoring, posting a 26.5 PPG average, and his 49 3-pointers are tied for fifth most in DII and are first in the RMAC rankings.
  • McDowell isn't the only threat in the offensive end, as Tyler Halligan is having a career year with an average of 15.8 PPG, ninth in the RMAC individual scoring rankings.
  • Jordan Kuac is also averaging double figures, with an average of 11.4 PPG, that figure rising as he's scored in double digits in eight of his last nine outings. And after reaching double figures only twice in his first 12 games this season, Quincy Scott has hit for 10 points in each of his last two game.
  • Halligan and Kuac are doing the cleanup work around the basket, Halligan ripping down 3.6 RPG with Kuac adding 5.1 each game.
  • Mason Mottashed is the setup man for the Mountaineers, doling out a total of 57 assists, fifth most amongst RMAC players.
COLORADO MESA HEADING INTO THE GAME | 2025-26 Stats
  • Mesa comes into Tuesday's game with an overall record of 8-6 and a conference mark of 4-2. It had a three-game win streak halted in its last outing, an overtime loss at Adams State. The Mavs have pushed past the 90 point mark in each of their last three games.
  • A packed in defense allows just 76 PPG to opponents, but the Mavs are giving up the long-range shot, opponents dropping in 148 so far this season, which could be a dangerous tacit against Western's McDowell and Halligan.
  • Ty Allred is the Mavs' leader, scoring 18.4 PPG and averaging a league best 9.1 RPG.
  • Cohenj Gonzales reaches double digits in scoring (12.5 PPG) with 24 triples helping push that average.
  • Harvey White leads CMU in assists with a total of 39, while also contributing 9.1 PPG.
WESTMINSTER HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2025-26 Stats
  • Westminster is 6-8 overall, but just 1-5 in RMAC play heading into a Thursday game at Mesa and Saturday's game at Western. Its lone conference win came against Colorado State Pueblo, but the Griffins have dropped both games since that victory.
  • Despite its record, Westminster is averaging a +9 scoring margin and a +7 rebounding margin this season. It also has converted more 3-point attempts than its opponents, 136 to 132.
  • It's a three-prong balanced scoring attack by the Griffins as Michael Frazier (12.9 PPG), Colin Hayes (12.2) and Cole Kadoguchi (11.1) share the scoring in the offensive end.
  • Kadoguchi is the long-range threat for Westminster, his 38 made 3-pointers 15 more than Tommy Ball's 23.
  • Frazier (6.7 RPG) and Jonah El-Farra (6.6) crash the boards for the Griffins.
  • Jake Nadauld leads the team in both assists (42) and steals (17).
UP NEXT
It's an upcoming four game homestand for Western, beginning next week with a Thursday game against South Dakota Mines and a Saturday contest against Black Hills State.
