Wartanian Sprints to School Record

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  Freshman sprinter Nellie Wartanian added her name into the Western Colorado track & field record book for a second time this year, setting a new program mark in the 100-meter dash Friday afternoon at the Air Force Twilight meet.

Wartanian tied Colorado State's Jessica Ozoude for first place as the pair both posted times of 11.59 seconds.

The altitude-adjusted time of 11.66 for Wartanian surpassed the NCAA Division II provisional time of 11.76, and prior to the conclusion of the national championship qualifying period on Sunday puts her national ranking at No. 41 in the event.

The day wasn't over yet for Wartanian, though, as in the final individual women's event she earned the event title in the 200m dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 24.22. Wartanian earlier in the outdoor season set the Western record in that event with a time of 23.92.

Other Western performers at the Twilight meet included a fifth place by Logan Butterfield in the men's hammer throw, a fifth place by Sammie Bretz in the women's high jump, and a sixth place by Kelia Portis in the women's 400m hurdles.

Late Friday night in California, Western's Allison Beasley competed in the women's 5,000m run at the Franson Last Chance meet in Azusa, Calif., where she placed fifth of 41 runners with a time of 16 minutes, 51.27 seconds.
