GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. In a regularly scheduled non-conference prequel to the end of the season Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling dual, Western Colorado will travel to Colorado Mesa University for a Thursday evening dual against the host Mavericks.
HISTORY
Western has a 17-13 edge over the Mavs throughout the duals history, winning the RMAC dual last season (29-16) in February after dropping a 31-12 decision in the non-conference dual in December.
WESTERN COLORADO HEADING INTO THE DUAL
- The Mountaineers are 2-1 overall, not including a 54-0 shutout in an exhibition dual against Northeastern Junior College that kicked off the 2025-26 schedule.
- Their wins came on Nov. 8 in San Francisco where Western rallied from behind to defeat Vanguard (Calif.) University (23-20) before defeating host S.F. State (27-13).
- The Mountaineers led through five weights in the final dual of the day, but Menlo (Calif.) College swept the final five weights to hand Western its first defeat of the season (25-19).
- A highlight of the Colorado School of Mines Rookie Open was Miles Harris' run into the championship bout of the 149-pound bracket, finishing in the runner-up spot after a loss to a Division I opponent from Air Force.
- The Mountaineers pushed a pair of wrestlers – Roberto Estrada (125) and Devin Gomez (133) – into the quarterfinal rounds of their respective Elite brackets at the UNK Younes Hospitality Open, while in the Amateur division at the Open, Tino Gonzales rolled into the championship bout in his 149 bracket where he would finish as the runner-up.
COLORADO MESA HEADING INTO THE DUAL
- The Mavs are 1-0 with an RMAC win (24-13) over New Mexico Highlands, but also claimed an exhibition shutout victory (47-0) over Northeastern JC early in the season.
- Four Mesa wrestlers earned placements in the Elite brackets at the Younes Open, with Levi DiCugno earning third place in the 174 bracket, Dayson Torgerson (125) finishing fourth, Tyler Doyle (285) taking fifth and Gabriel Carranza (197) placing sixth.
- The Mavs have three wrestlers in the National Wrestling Coaches Association individual rankings with Torgerson No. 4 at 125, Owen Cline No. 5 at 157, and Carrenza No. 9 at 197.
UP NEXT
- Western will send a large group of redshirts and reserves to the Dec. 7 FHSU Bob Smith Open, hosted by Fort Hays (Kan.) State.
- The varsity will next step on the mat Dec. 14-15 for the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis.
