INDIANAPOLISÂ Western Colorado wrestling will be sending five Mountaineers to the mats on the second day of the 46th Annual Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis at Nicoson Hall.
Each of the five are on the consolation side of the bracket with four of the five heading into the fifth consolation round and other into the fourth.
Devin Gomez at 133 pounds won his first two bouts on the championship side of the bracket, the first by a second period fall, and the next by a 14-1 major decision. His loss in the third round of the championship bracket shifted Gomez to the consols side, where he pounded out a 19-7 technical fall win to advance into the fifth consols round.
Eyan Chavez dropped his opening match by a decision, but strung together three consecutive wins in the 149-pound consolation bracket to head into its fifth round on Sunday morning. His first of those wins was a 10-4 decision, but he followed with a first period pin in the third round and then a second period fall in the fourth round to earn a second day at the Classic.
Hunter Richardson in the 184 bracket had an opening-round bye then advanced with a 7-3 decision before getting bumped to the consolation side of the bracket in a narrow 4-2 decision. He picked up an 8-4 decision in the consolations to head into the bracket's fifth round on Sunday.
Sage Harrison, at 197, followed the same path as Richardson, opening with a bye, advancing with a 6-4 decision then getting moved to the consolation bracket in the third round. He made up for that defeat with a 16-5 major to move on to Sunday and the bracket's fifth consolation round.
Vincent Cabral will join the other four on Sunday morning, wrestling in the fourth round of the 157 consolation bracket. Just like Richardson and Harrison, Cabral opened with a bye on Saturday, advanced with a decision (9-7), then lost in the next round to be forced into the consolation bracket where he opened with a 17-2 tech fall to earn a Sunday spot in the bracket's fourth consolation round.
The Mountaineers will head into Day 2 in 22nd place within the team standings, with 27.5 points.
