GUNNISON, Colo.  The Mountaineers will look to extend win streaks against their next two opponents when MSU Denver and Regis University visit Paul Wright Gym Thursday and Saturday for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's basketball games.

Western opened RMAC play with a road split last weekend, but the second of those two games was a come-from-behind victory over CSU Pueblo that might bring momentum into play despite the time gap between then and the upcoming weekend.

WESTERN COLORADO HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2025-26 Stats
  • Both Colorado Christian and CSU Pueblo have historically been difficult places to play for the Mountaineers (3-3, 1-1 RMAC), who are 3-12 all-time at CCU and 3-11 at Pueblo. But the comeback at CSUP on Dec. 6 shows the growth of a program that finished the 2024-25 campaign as the No. 2 seed in the RMAC tournament and played into the semifinals of the conference playoffs.
  • Western gets most of its production in the offense end from Ivey Schmidt, Alyssa Eckroth and Jayda Maves who combine to average 42 of Western's 63 points per game average.
  • Schmidt, who averaged 12 PPG and 14 PPG her previous two seasons, is pouring in an average of 18 PPG this season. Similarly, Eckroth averaged 7 PPG or fewer her first two seasons but is scoring at a 14 PPG clip this year while Maves' 13 PPG mark is her highest average in her three seasons with the Mountaineers.
  • Western has been a solid defensive team and rebounding machine since the arrival of head coach Adam Jacobson, and both of those facets continue to be strongholds for the Mountaineers. Penelope Urquhart and Schmidt both average 7 RPG, with five others pulling down a minimum of 2 rebounds per game.
  • Despite Maves' long-range ability with 16 3-pointers this winter, the Mountaineers have found more success when they keep their attempts from behind the arc in the teens rather than in the 20s. They put up a total of 11 attempts in the win at Pueblo and just 17 earlier in a win over Texas A&M International, two of Western's three victories.
  • The Mountaineers are 9-14 all time against MSU Denver but swept last season's games and have defeated the Roadrunners three straight. The Mountaineers are 11-13 all time against Regis, but downed the Rangers both times last season, by an average of 17 points, to halt a Regis three-game winning streak.
MSU DENVER COMING INTO THE GAME | 2025-26 Stats
  • The Roadrunners (2-6, 1-1 RMAC), played an exhibition game against Division I and neighbor University of Denver on Tuesday, so they enter Thursday's game with just one day's rest.
  • The general statistics reflect the overall record – though those stats include a few games against ranked opponents – as MSUD is being outscored by an average of 9 PPG and outrebounded by 10 RPG. It also is minus-2 in average turnover margins.
  • Despite the scoring deficit, the Roadrunners have three players averaging double figures in Jadyn Watts (13.1 PPG), Mikylah Espinosa (12.0) and Nevaeh Millard (10.6).
  • Not known for generating a lot of 3-pointers – only 142 total attempts compared to 181 by its opponents – MSUD instead has shown an ability to control the ball on offense and generate free throw attempts, going to the line 161 times (versus opponents' 140 trips).
  • Espinosa, in addition to being the second-leading scorer, is the setup leader as well, with 35 assists while in the opposite role leads the Roadrunners defensively with 16 steals.
REGIS HEADING INTO THE GAME | 2025-26 Stats
  • The Rangers dropped a narrow 67-64 home game to Fort Lewis College in their most recent game, dropping their record to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC. Regis does not, however, have a Thursday game scheduled so will come to Paul Wright Gym on Saturday with a full week of rest and preparation for the Mountaineers.
  • Like with MSU Denver, the statistics tell the story. On average, the Rangers are being outscored 70-51 while also averaging a minus-4 in turnover margin.
  • Regis has a +4 rebounding margin on average, but opponents are hitting 42 percent of their shots against the Rangers' defense.
  • Kate Gallery provides most of the scoring for the Rangers, averaging 16.5 PPG, with only three baskets from behind the arc. She's been a pure shooter for Regis, not a drive and shoot player as she's gotten to the free throw line just four times all season.
  • Caitie Turnbow lends secondary scoring help at 11.0 PPG while Jessica Bollwahn has been doing the hard work around the basket, averaging 12.6 RPG.
UP NEXT
Western steps out of RMAC action before the holiday break, heading to Lawton, Okla., for a pair of Dec. 19 and 20 neutral-site games against Washburn (Kan.) University and Pittsburg State (Kan.) University, respectively, playing both teams for the first time in Western program history.
