GUNNISON, Colo. Coming off the second winningest season in program history, Western Colorado women's basketball embarks on the 2026-27 with its season opener Monday, November 17 against visiting Angelo (Texas) State University at 6 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym.
The Mountaineers last season tripled their victory total from the previous year (7) to win 21 games, advancing to the second round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament for the first time since 2021.
HISTORY
Western won the first meeting between the two programs in 2021, but Angelo State has won three in a row over the Mountaineers, including last season's 57-54 neutral-site game in Denver.
WESTERN COLORADO HEADING INTO THE GAME | 2024-25 Stats
- The Mountaineers have some key players returning for the 2025-26 season, including All-RMAC guard Ivey Schmidt, honorable mention all-conference guard Jayda Maves and a trio of players – Chloe Daniels, Alyssa Eckroth and Penelope Urquhart – who played in all 29 games and combined to average more than 14 minutes played per game last season.
- Schmidt last year led the team in scoring at 13.6 PPG, assists (78) and steals (32). A pair of seniors were second and third in scoring last year (combined 20.4 PPG), so Maves (7.7) and Eckroth (5.1) are two returners who will likely need to find those missing points.
- Western's top rebounder last season is gone, and playing professionally in Portugal this year, but Schmidt was savvy enough to come away with 5.7 rebounds per game, and Daniels could be one of the players to step into the post to make up for the loss of the team's rebounding leader.
- Maves is one of the RMAC's top 3-point shooters and finished last season with 48 made treys.
- Coach Adam Jacobson will meld four freshmen and four transfers into the group of returners, as well as welcoming a new assistant coach, Tanesha Daniels, to the sideline.
- Western began the 2025-26 schedule with exhibition games at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, followed by a home exhibition against Northern New Mexico College.
ANGELO STATE HEADING INTO THE GAME | 2025-26 Stats
- The Rambelles will have two games under the belts before they arrive at Paul Wright Gym. RECAP of Adams and Regis…..
- Last winter ASU posted an 18-12 overall record and a 13-9 mark in Lone Star Conference play, falling out of the LSC postseason tournament in the second round after a loss to top-seeded Texas Woman's University.
- ASU lost its top scorer and rebounder to graduation, but right behind and averaging double digits in scoring were Keniah Williams (12.5 PPG) and Majik Esquivel (11.8).
- Williams was a force inside for the Rambelles, averaging 8.7 RPG while registering 77 blocked shots.
- Esquivel led the team from behind the arc with 56 3-pointers, and returner Addy Burns set up the ASU offense with a total of 75 assists.
