GUNNISON, Colo. Mountaineer wrestling is set to host Colorado State University Pueblo in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual Saturday evening in Paul Wright Gym.
The program's Community Night, Saturday will also serve as the 13th-ranked Mountaineers' Wear Blue Run to Remember event, supporting military families and preserving the memory of our fallen heroes.
THE HISTORY
Western has won the last three match-ups with the ThunderWolves and have won 14 of the 17 duals since the first meeting in February 1997.
WESTERN COLORADO HEADING INTO THE DUAL
- The Mountaineers (5-4 overall, 2-2 RMAC) are coming off a challenging road trip that saw one exhibition dual victory but losses at both Chadron State and Colorado School of Mines.
- Western was tied at 17-17 after a Sage Harrison pin at 197 in the loss at Chadron, and led 12-9 against Mines after Vincent Cabral's 4-1 upset of 11th-ranked Marcus Carol at 157. The losses halted a win streak of five, including the exhibition win over Northeastern Junior College that kicked off last weekend's road swing.
- The Mountaineers enter the CSUP dual with Cole Hernandez ranked No. 1 at 174 and Dean Noble ranked No. 3 at 149.
CSU PUEBLO COMING INTO THE DUAL
- The ThunderWolves are 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC. After dropping its first two outings this season, they ran off eight straight wins, a string that was stopped in a 24-12 loss to No. 16 Colorado Mines on Jan. 24. CSUP traveled to Central Oklahoma next and lost 40-6 to the fifth-ranked Bronchos.
- The back end of the ThunderWolves lineup has been piling on points. Prior to the Central Oklahoma match Donn Greer at 184 had won six in a row, including two by fall.
- At 197, Remington Winmill had won four straight before losses in the Mines and Central Oklahoma matches. And at 285, Henry Sturn reeled off six wins including a pair of majors and one by fall.
UP NEXT
- The Mountaineers close out their home schedule with a dual on Feb. 7 against Adams State University.
