MBB Heads to Alamosa, Durango to Face a Pair of RMAC Foes

ALAMOSA, Colo. Western Colorado will travel to Alamosa, Colo., and Durango, Colo., for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests beginning on Friday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. The team will then make its way to Durango, Colo., where they will face the nation's No. 3 team in Fort Lewis with tip-off slated for 6 p.m., inside Whalen Gym.  

The Mountaineers faced both teams early in the season and went 1-1 getting a hard-fought overtime win against Adams State before falling to Fort Lewis the next night. Against the Grizzlies, the game was tied at 71 at the end of regulation and were down three with 42 seconds left on the clock. Jamel Hollins drew a foul and put the Mountaineers down by just two with a free throw. Spencer Wright came up clutch with a three-pointer with .02 seconds left on the clock giving the Mountaineers the win. Against the Skyhawks, Amar Rivers led the Mountaineers with nine points, while Hollins, Trevin Lieck and Avery Rembao led the defense with five rebounds apiece.  

MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats 

  • Western Colorado (8-14, 5-11 RMAC) is coming off a weekend sweep of Chadron State and Colorado Christian at home last weekend. Kade Juelfs led the offensive charge with 48 points over the two-game including a career-high 34-points against the Cougars Saturday night. Juelfs went 8-for-13 from the field, 5-for-8 from three-point range and 13-foor-15 from the free throw line Saturday night. The junior leads the Mountaineers with 13.3 points per game and 48-percent shooting from the field this season.  
  • Tyler Halligan has made a name for himself in his first season with the Mountaineers as he has registered 7.2 points per game while shooting 48-percent from the field. Halligan has also picked up 13 steals for the Mountaineers on defense.  
  • Jamel Hollins leads Western Colorado's defensive efforts with 5.9 rebounds per game and 88 total rebounds on the season. Andrew Reichart has also registered 88 total rebounds this season with 4 rebounds per game. Amar Rivers leads his team with 17 blocks this season, which is 10 more blocks than any other player on the Mountaineers roster.  

GRIZZLIES HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • The Grizzlies (8-15, 6-11) are coming off a midweek loss to No. 3 Fort Lewis after winning both games last weekend. Austin Fadal had a game-high 19 points against the Skyhawks going 5-for-11 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Three other players – Isaiah Sampson, Kolby Walker and Luke Williams – also scored in double digits for Adams State on Tuesday night.  
  • As a team, Adams State has averaged 79.9 points per game while its opponents have averaged 85.8 points per game. The offense is shooting 47-percent from the field while shooting 32-percent from three-point range. Adams State is averaging 30.7 points per game, which is 5.5 rebounds pe game less than its opponents.  
  • Destan Williams leads the offensive charge for the Grizzlies, averaging 16.2 points per game with a 50-percent shooting from the field. Fadal is right behind Williams in points per game with 15.6 and 52-percent shooting from the field. Defensively, Isaiah Sampson leads the Grizzlies with 5.2 rebounds per game and 23 blocks.  

SKYHAWKS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • The Skyhawks (21-2, 16-1 RMAC) sit first in the RMAC Standings heading into the final three weeks of the regular season and are on a nine-game winning streak with their last loss coming on Jan. 12 to UCCS. During their nine-game win streak, the Skyhawks beat No. 10 Colorado School of Mines at home and No. 7 Colorado Mesa on the road. Fort Lewis is averaging 85.7 points per game with its opponents registering 70.1 points per game.  
  • Three Skyhawks have averaged double digit points per game so far this season including Obi Agbim who leads his team in scoring with 14.3 points per game. Malik Whitaker is second on the team in scoring with 11.3 points per game, followed by Brayden Carter who has averaged 104. Points per game in his first season at Fort Lewis.  
  • Carter leads the Skyhawks in rebounds per game (5.5) while he has tallied 127 boards in 23 games off the bench for his squad.

The Mountaineers will return home for their final pair of home games this season on Friday, Feb. 23 and Feb. 24. Western Colorado will host Regis in Paul Wright Gym on Friday with a 7 p.m. tipoff. For their final home game of the season, the Mountaineers will host UCCS at 5 p.m., in Gunnison, Colo.
