GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado made the most of its home mat setting on Saturday, sweeping its three matches at the Mountaineer-hosted and 33rd annual Tracy Borah Duals in the Mountaineer Field House.
Western opened with a 22-19 win over Minot (N.D.) State University, picked up a 46-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Simon Fraser (B.C., Canada) University, then closed out the day with a 46-5 win over the University of Findlay (Ohio).
The three wins raise the Mountaineers' overall record to 5-2 and their RMAC mark to 2-0.
WESTERN VS MINOT STATE
- The Mountaineers and Beavers evenly split the 10 bouts, but Western earned bonus-point wins in three of its five victories to create the scoring gap at the end of the match.
- Roberto Estrada began the day with a 17-4 major decision at 125, and after Minot earned decisions in the next two weights to take the lead (6-4), Dean Noble provided Western with a lead it wouldn't again relinquish with a stunning 18-second pin at 149.
- Ryan Wilson added to the lead with a decision at 157, but the advantage was narrowed to a point (13-12) after a Minot pin at 165. Cole Hernandez picked up the third bonus-point victory with a first-period pin at 184, and Cole Gray grabbed a decision at 184 that put Minot in a hole deep enough from which they couldn't climb over the final two weights.
WESTERN VS SIMON FRASER
- The Mountaineers picked up their second RMAC win of the season with the crushing victory over the Red Leafs. Over the eight bouts competed, Western recorded bonus points in six including four pins and two tech falls.
- The 125 match was a double forfeit, with Western's Roberto Estrada moving up to the 133 match. It didn't take long for Estrada to earn the initial points of the match, though, as he pinned Jagvir Grewall just 67 seconds into the first period.
- Zachery Flowers at 141 and Noble at 149 also earned first-period wins. Flowers piled up points quickly in a 16-0 tech fall, then Noble earned the team's second pin with a fall at the 1:44 mark.
- Wilson and Walker Heckendorf kept the winning streak rolling with decisions at 157 and 165, respectively, then Hernandez earned a fall at the 2:45 mark of the 174-pound match.
- Gray dominated the first period at 184, but had to wait until the third before he could end the bout with a pin at 6:36. Sage Harrison contributed a third-period tech fall at 197 before Zachary Schraeder was credited with a forfeit win at 285 to close out the shutout.
WESTERN VS FINDLAY
- 125 was again a non-point double-forfeit, and again Estrada was at 133, but this time he dropped a tech fall to Findlay's Gavin Ritter to open the final match of the Duals.
- A Noah Kasprowicz forfeit win put Western back in front, 6-5, and the rout was on from that point at Noble added a fall at 149 and Wilson earned a major at 157. Noble's was the most emphatic pin of the event as he picked up Kelinberg to shoulder height and, turning him to his back in midair, came down on top of the Oiler for a quickly-signaled pin by the referee.
- Ryan Dirksen took just 66 seconds to pin his opponent at 165, only to have that time record bested in the next match with Hernandez earning a fall in only 55 seconds.
- Findlay forfeited both the 184 and 197 matches, sending Schraeder to the mat for the final bout. Like many others during the match, it didn't make it out of the first period as Schraeder added an exclamation-point pin at the 2:03 mark.
Candi Borah, daughter of Tracy Borah, is honored before the Mountaineers' final match of the 33rd Tracy Borah Duals.
