Bonus Point Wins lead Western Past CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. Roberto Estrada started it off with a technical fall in the opening match and Western Colorado added four more bonus point wins to remain unbeaten in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling action, downing host Colorado State University Pueblo, 26-22, Friday night at Massari Arena.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Western def. CSU Pueblo, 26-22
Records: Western 9-3 overall (4-0 RMAC), CSU Pueblo 5-4 (1-1)
Location: Massari Arena, Pueblo, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Though Estrada's first-period 18-0 tech fall at 125 pounds put Western on the scoreboard first, they trailed 9-5 heading into the 149-pound match with Dean Noble stepping onto the mat.
  • Noble lifted Western back in front with a 17-2 tech fall at the 6:22 mark, flipping the advantage to the Mountaineers at 10-9., But Pueblo stole a decision at 157 with a takedown in the final seconds of the third period, momentarily wresting back the lead, 12-10.
  • Walker Heckendorf, a 'pinner' says head coach Charlie Pipher, did exactly what his coach had remarked earlier in the week, taking just 71 seconds to record a fall over Pueblo's Elijah Valdez.
  • The Cole Attack followed, as third-ranked Cole Hernandez earned a 19-3 third period tech fall at 174 followed by Cole Gray's 18-1 second period tech fall at 184 to push the Western advantage to 26-12.
  • Pueblo earned a major and a fall in the final two matches, but its deficit was too much to overcome as the ThunderWolves dropped their first RMAC match of the season.

UP NEXT

  • The Mountaineers will put their unblemished RMAC record to the test at 6 p.m. on Saturday night when they welcome 15th-ranked Chadron State (Neb.) College to Paul Wright Gym.
  • Saturday's dual is also the Mountaineers' Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night.
