GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado will return to Gunnison, Colo., for a duo of games this weekend, starting with a match up with Colorado State University Pueblo on Friday, January 19, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. They will then face New Mexico Highlands on Saturday, Jan. 20, starting at 5 p.m.  

The men's basketball team will look for redemption against both the ThunderWolves and Cowboys after taking losses to both teams' last season.  

The Western Colorado Basketball programs will be honoring local hero's including police officers, firefighters, medical workers and any active and retired military members by allowing them free admission into Friday night's contests. On Saturday, make sure to come dressed in your country outfits for country night.  

MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats 

  • The Mountaineers (4-10, 1-7 RMAC) are coming off a pair of close losses against South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State. Amar Rivers scored a season-high 18 points against the Yellow Jackets, while Kade Juelfs and Avery Rembao both scored double-digits as well.  

  • As a team, the Mountaineers' offense is averaging 62.1 points per game while shooting 41% from the field. Kade Juelfs continues to make a big impact on the hardwood averaging 11.8 points per game with a 47-clip from the field. Juelfs is also shooting 43% from 3-point range and over 80% from the free-throw line. Avery Rembao is also an offensive threat for the Mountaineers, averaging 10.1 points per game.  

  • Defensively, Jamel Hollins leads the squad with 5.7 rebounds per game, 10 steals and three blocks. Rivers has also been consistent for the Mountaineers with 3.4 rebounds per game, seven steals and eight blocks 

THUNDERWOLVES HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • The ThunderWolves (9-7, 5-5 RMAC) are coming off a 75-55 over New Mexico Highlands in a mid-week game. Five players scored in double figures for the Pack including Makiah Morris who registered a double-double (16 points, 13 rebounds). De'Shaun Cooper also registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds including nine defensive boards.  

  • Brevin Walter leads the Pack's offense with 17.9 points per game, while Morris has averaged 15.3 points per game. Walter has made 40% of his shots from the field this season, while also making 35% of his shots from beyond the arc. Cooper rounds out the ThunderWolves trio of offensive force, shooting 59% from the field.  

  • Morris and Cooper also lead the ThunderWolves defensively as Morris has averaged 7.2 rebounds per game and Cooper collecting 15 blocks this season.  

COWBOYS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • New Mexico Highlands (7-9, 4-7 RMAC) have dropped their last four conference games including a pair of games to two ranked opponents.  In the latest contest, Rodney Mason II had a team-high 11-points off the bench that includes going 5-for-10 from the field.  

  • Kenard Richardson leads the Cowboys with 10.7 points per game while shooting 35% from the field. He also has recorded a 36.4-clip from beyond the arc. 

  • Ezichi Kalu leads the Cowboys with 7.3 rebounds per game and has 20 blocks this season. Mason has also contributed to the Cowboys defensive efforts with 22 steals and 2.9 rebounds per game. 

UP NEXT 

Western Colorado will travel to the front range next weekend to face Colorado School of Mines on Friday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m., and Metropolitan State University of Denver at 5:30 p.m. The Mountaineers will return home to face Colorado Mesa in a mid-week match up on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
