GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado went 2-2 on their four-game road trip and now return to Paul Wright Gym this weekend, taking on Fort Lewis College on Friday (Feb. 10) at 5:30 p.m. and Adams State University (Feb. 11) at 5 p.m.
MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | SEASON STATS | RMAC STATS
- Western has had to pull off some tough road wins as of late - only having seven/eight players at times – and will have to continue to pull off tough wins for the remainder of the season, if they want a chance at making the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) tournament.
- At the moment, the Mountaineers are tied for 10th (5-11) in the RMAC standings, needing to get to at least eighth-place in order to qualify for the tournament. At the moment Colorado Christian is in eighth-place (6-10). However, there is a three-way tie between CSU Pueblo, Colorado Mesa, and UCCS for seventh place each having a 7-9 RMAC record.
- Emmery Wagstaff has been on a scoring spree lately, averaging 22.4-points over the last five games. Two of those games Wagstaff scored 30 and 35 points. Rachel Cockman is also a threat in the paint for Western, averaging 12.6-points (tied for 13th in RMAC). Wagstaff has also been lethal the free throw line making 80.3 percent (fifth in RMAC), from beyond the arc making 31.6 percent (sixth in RMAC) and from the field making 37.8 percent (eighth in RMAC).
- Defensively, Cockman is one of the better rim protectors in the RMAC, blocking 0.9 shots (sixth in RMAC). On the glass, Wagstaff chases down rebounds grabbing a team high 6.3 rebounds (tied for 12th in RMAC).
- As a team, Western has the 15th ranked offense scoring 57.1-points, and the sixth ranked defense only allowing 61.9-points. The Mountaineers shoot, 39.7 percent from the field, 31 percent from three and 68.6 percent from the free throw line.
SKYHAWKS STRUGGLING TO TAKE FLIGHT
- Things have been up and down for Fort Lewis as of late, resulting in them being 2-3 over their last five games. Recently, the Skyhawks were grounded by Adams State who defeated them 71-76 on Tuesday (Feb. 7). That loss put them tied for 10th (5-11) in the RMAC standings.
- Lanae Billy is a key to Fort Lewis success as she averages 17.3-points in RMAC contest, which is second best in the RMAC. Kelsey Sorenson is also dangerous on the offensive end, scoring 13-points on average. Billy leads the team, in shooting threes making 36 percent (third in RMAC), shooting from the field making 37.5 percent (ninth in RMAC), and free throw percentage sinking 71.3 percent (ninth in RMAC).
- On the defensive side, Billy is also a factor averaging a team high 2.5 steals (fourth in RMAC). Sorenson leads the team in rebounding grabbing eight boards (fifth in RMAC) and blocked shots, blocking 0.6 (tied for eighth) and is second in steals with 1.8 (tied for ninth in RMAC).
- As a team, the Skyhawks have the 14th ranked offense scoring 58.5-points and 12th ranked defense giving up 67.1-points. Fort Lewis shoots 36.3 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from three and 68.6 percent from the free throw line.
GRIZZLIES HOT AS OF LATE
- Adams State has been dominant this season and enters the weekend on a three-game winning streak after defeating Fort Lewis 76-71. At the moment, the Grizzlies are in fourth-place (12-5) in the RMAC standings.
- Harmanie Dominguez is the go to scorer for Adams State, averaging 13.3-points (11th in RMAC) in RMAC contest. She also leads her team from beyond the arc making 36.6 percent, which is second best in the RMAC.
- Leading the team in rebounds and blocked shots is Darlisha Reed who grabs 6.1 boards (tied for 13th in RMAC) and blocks 1.0 shots (fifth in RMAC). When it comes to racking up steals, Angelline Nageak leads the RMAC with 3.4 steals. A few spots down ranked sixth in steals is Elaina Watson who averages 2.3 steals.
- As a team, the Grizzlies have the second ranked offense scoring 73.5-points and the ninth ranked defense giving up 64.4-points. Adams State shoots 43.5 percent from the field (second in RMAC), 31.3 percent from three (seventh in RMAC) and 68.2 percent from the free throw line (11th in RMAC).
