GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado has had a rough stretch as of late. But, will look to get back on track this weekend when they host MSU Denver (Jan. 20) and Colorado School of Mines (Jan. 21).
 
MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | SEASON STATS | RMAC STATS | RMAC STANDINGS
  • Western has been on a four-game losing streak lately. However, all four of those loses have been by single digits – two of those games being decided by three-points or less, the other two being five-point losses.
  • Recently, the Mountaineers loss 49-54 to New Mexico Highlands (Jan. 13) and 56-61 to Colorado State University Pueblo. With those pair or losses Western currently is in 12th place (3-7) in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings, with 12 games left in the season. The top-8 teams in the RMAC make the RMAC tournament.
  • At the moment, the Mountaineers have 15th place offense, scoring 56.1-points in RMAC contest. Emmery Wagstaff is the top scorer for Western averaging 14.9-points (eighth in RMAC) and Rachel Cockman is the next highest scorer, averaging 12.3-points (13th in RMAC). Cockman has the best field goal percentage on the team, making 51.1 percent of her shots. Wagstaff, Cockman and Hayley Valencia each crack the top-18 in free throw percentage in the RMAC, Wagstaff making 81.4 percent (seventh in RMAC), Cockman sinking 75 percent (ninth in RMAC) and Valencia making 57.4 percent (18th in RMAC).
  • There are only two teams better than the Mountaineers when it comes to team defense, as they have the third ranked defense only giving up 59.5-points in RMAC contest. Brooklyn Seymour is the leading rebounder for Western grabbing 5.9 boards (tied for 16th in RMAC). Right behind her, Valencia grabs 5.8 rebounds (tied for 17th in RMAC) and Wagstaff grabs 5.7 (18th in RMAC). One of the best shot blockers in the RMAC, Cockman blocks 1.1 shots which is third best in the RMAC).   
  • As a whole, Western shoots 39.8 percent from the field (fifth in RMAC), 29.3 percent from three (10th in RMAC) and 67.4 percent (11th in RMAC).
ROADRUNNERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | SEASON STATS
  • MSU Denver has had an okay season so far, currently sitting in seventh-place (5-5) in the RMAC standings – after defeating UCCS (Jan. 13) 65-51 and losing 60-63 to Regis (Jan. 14).
  • The Roadrunners enter the weekend with the ninth ranked offense in the RMAC, scoring 61.1-points. Kendra Parra is the main scorer for MSU Denver, scoring 16.4-points in RMAC contest. Parra also leads the team in field goal and free throw percentage. Shooting 37.5 percent from the field (10th in RMAC) and a league high 87 percent from the line. Tosjanae Bonds is also lethal at the free throw line making 84.6 percent (fifth in RMAC). From beyond the arc, Brianna Bailey leads the RMAC making 53.1 percent.
  • On the defensive side, the Roadrunners have a top defense in the RMAC only giving up 61.5-points (fifth in RMAC). Miza Gilberto is the top rebounder for MSU Denver, grabbing 6.9 rebounds (tied for ninth in RMAC) and a few spots, Parra is 15th in the RMAC with six rebounds. One of the better shot blockers in the RMAC, Brianna Sealy blocks one shot per game which is tied for fourth in the RMAC. Mikylah Espinosa leads the Roadrunners in steals, averaging 2.1 (tied for fourth in the RMAC). Next on that list is Jaiden Galloway averaging 1.8 (tied for fifth in RMAC), Parra recording 1.7 (sixth in RMAC) and Bonds who averages 1.5 (tied for eighth).    
  • As a whole, MSU Denver shoots 39 percent from the field (seventh in RMAC), 27.8 percent from three (14th in RMAC), and 70 percent from the free throw line (sixth in RMAC).
OREDIGGERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | SEASON STATS
  • Colorado School of Mines had a rough weekend last week, as they lost to Regis (Jan. 13) 64-76 and UCCS (Jan. 14) 64-67. The loss on Friday (Jan. 13) was the Orediggers first loss since Nov. 19 (Sat.), when they fell 47-59 to Nebraska-Kearney. Additionally, that loss snapped an 11-game winning streak. Despite losing two games this past weekend, Colorado School of Mines is still in first place (9-2) in the RMAC standings.  
  • Offensively, the Orediggers have the best offense in the RMAC scoring 74.8-points in RMAC contest. Megan Van de Graaf is the top scorer for Colorado School of Mines, averaging 13.5-points (10th in RMAC). Josephine Howery, Ashley Steffeck and Sammy Van Sickle are also ones to watch on offense – Howery averaging 11.4 (19th in RMAC), Steffeck averaging 11.3 (20th in RMAC) and Van Sickle averaging 10-points (23rd in RMAC). Van de Graaf leads the team in field goal percentage, making 54.6 percent (fourth in RMAC) and Steffeck leads the way at the free throw line making 86 percent (third in RMAC).    
  • When it comes to defense, the Orediggers have the fourth ranked defense giving up 60.2-points. Van Sickle is the top rebounder for Colorado School of Mines grabbing 7.6 boards (fifth in RMAC) and coming in tied for 12th in the RMAC, Van de Graaf grabs 6.5 boards. In the blocked shots category, Van Sickle is the best in the RMAC blocking 1.9 shots and Steffeck is tied for eighth with 0.6 blocks. Similar to blocks, Van Sick is one of the better defenders in the RMAC stealing the ball three times a game, which is second in the RMAC. Steffeck is not far behind her, recording 2.3 steals (tied for fourth in RMAC).
  • As a whole, the Orediggers shoot 39.6 percent from the field (sixth in RMAC), 29.1 percent from three (11th in RMAC) and 73.1 percent from the free throw line (fourth in RMAC).
