ALAMOSA, Colo. On Thursday, the Mountaineers are going back onto the road for matches on Thursday (Feb. 10) and Friday (Feb. 11), they are currently on a two-match winning streak and hope to extend that when they face Simon Fraser University and Adams State University while the next day they will be hosted by Chadron State College.
The last time that Western faced Simon Fraser University (Jan. 12, 2019) and Adams State University (Jan. 16, 2020) they won against both Simon Fraser University 39-12 and Adams State University 31-12.

MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND
  • Western is looking to continue their winning streak as they head into this weekend. The Mountaineers were able to win their last two matches, which were against New Mexico Highlands University (39-6) and Colorado State University Pueblo (28-8).
  • In their last matchup against CSU-Pueblo, Western came out swinging with Cody Fatzinger who got a 13-5 major decision win in the 125-pound weight class. He led 4-2 after the first, 8-4 after the second, and had two takedowns against one escape in the third, which added a riding time point to his eight-point win.
  • At the 133-weight class, CSU-Pueblo was able to get their first points on the board with a pin, which gave them the lead. Western was then able to go into domination mode, by getting 7 consecutive wins against the ThunderWolves.
  • Western's Jimmy LaConte recorded the lone fall for the Mountaineers during that seven-bout stretch, needing just 92 seconds to pin Pueblo's Remington Winmill at the 174 match.
  • Dean Noble in the 141-weight class was the one who started the streak for western, just missing out on a major decision with a 15-8 victory.
  • Jason Hanenberg at 149 and Ryan Wilson at 157 followed with 4-0 and 9-4 victory decisions, before Hunter Mullin got a 11-5 win at the 165-weight class.
  • After LaConte was pinned, Western earned a pair of narrow decision victories.
  • At the 184-weight class, Cole Gray won 8-6 after earning the riding time point in the very-close bout
  • Porter Fox at 197 trailed 0-1 after the first two periods, but to start the third period he was able to escape from the bottom, and earned a takedown for a 3-1 lead, then added another takedown which gave him the 5-3 victory.
SIMON FRASER HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND
  • Simon Fraser is coming off a win Against Clackamas CC (Jan. 29) 20-16, which has them sitting at a record of 7-1.
  • Simon Fraser University was able to earn 6 points from two pins by Randy McDonald at 141 pounds and Ryan Hicks at 149 pounds, over their opponents Marckis Branford and Micah Worthington.
  • Senior Logan Nelson won the 184-pound match via technical fall over Ramtin Yazdani to give SFU five team points.
  • At 285 pounds, sophomore Taniela Feliciano-Takafua outscored his opponent Kyle Richards 5-1 to record the decision win, which allowed SFU to get the 20-16 victory over Clackamas CC.
GRIZZLIES HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND
  • Adams State University is coming off a loss in their last meet against Colorado Mesa University (Feb. 4), the final score was 12-23.
  • The meet started with Isaiah De La Cerda (125 pounds) starting off strong in his match, but ultimatley losing the narrowly lead match with a 5-2 decision.
  • Jonathan Andreatta at 133 pounds was able to pick up a 7-5 decision to tie the team score at 3.
  • Angel Flores at 141 pounds was able to get to a 1-0 lead in the second period, Erik Contreras of Mesa was able to make an escape early in the third period as well as a takedown in the third to make ASU lose 1-3. The grizzlies were now losing 6-3 going into the fourth match.
  • Noah Hermosillo (149 pounds) fell behind to his opponent early on in the match. This did not last long as Hermosillo used two escapes and a takedown to take a 4-2 lead with just under a minute left, which ended up tied at 6.
  • Josiah Rider (157 pounds) was able to use riding time to his advantage, and got a 3-2 win over his opponent, Ryan Wheeler.
  • Nolan Krone of Colorado Mesa University was able to get a huge 18-2 technical fall over Adam's Ben Tonnessen at 184 pounds, which lead them to eventually win the meet over Adam's State University.
EAGLES HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND
  • Chadron State College is coming off of a loss against Colorado School of Mines (Feb. 6) 3-37, which brings their overall record to 5-3.
  • The Colorado School of Mines Orediggers took 9 out of 10 bouts in the match, with falls at 141, 157, and 184 pounds. They also had a major decision victory at 149 pounds.
  • Kobe Lepe at 133 pounds was the only wrestler on Chadron state to record a victory, where a close match finished in a 3-2 Chadron State victory.
  • Three of the bouts in this match came down to two points or less.
Western will wrap up the busy week on the road on Sunday, Feb. 13 competing in the Colorado School of Mines Open in Golden, Colo. at 9 a.m. 

ON THE MAT NEXT
For their next matchup, the Mountaineers will be coming back to Gunnison to host Colorado Mesa University on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m.
