MAT NOTES
  • The Eagles thought they had the momentum early after winning the 125-pound match via a fall (6:43) to start the match. However, whatever momentum they thought they had got snatched away quickly.
  • Alex Alvarez (133) was in control for the entire match, holding a 4-0 lead heading into the third period – after earning takedown and a two-point near fall – then put things away by pinning (6:33) Kobe Lepe, tying the score at six-points apiece.
  • Things would be harder for Dean Noble (141) in his match, as the score was tied 4-4 after the first period. Noble slowly, started to separate himself in the second period earning a escape and takedown then would hold off Ethan Leake in the third period to earn a 7-5 decision victory.
  • Jason Hanenberg (149) didn't have to do much to win his match, earning a forfeit victory to extend the lead to 15-6.
  • In the 157-pound weight class, Ryan Wilson made it look easy – his opponent only earning three-points all coming via a one-point escape – leading to Wilson defeating Harrison Gocke by a 12-3 major decision victory.
  • Similar to Hanenberg, Hunter Mullin (165) got to rest tonight earning six-points on a forfeit victory.
  • Cole Hernandez (174) could have easily earned a technical fall victory up 14-1 in the second period. But, decided to go ahead and put away Darwin Hull via a pin.
  • Cole Gray (184) was the last Mountaineer to have an easy night receiving Western's third forfeit victory of the night.
  • The Eagles final victory of the night came at the 197-pound weight class. Yet, the Mountaineers made them work for that 7-4 decision victory.
  • Western finished the night on a strong note, thanks to Sammy deSeriere (285) who took an early 2-0 lead to start over Gavin Peitzmeier. In the second period deSeriere got things going earning a reversal, a one-point illegal hold and a takedown which led to deSeriere pinning Peitzmeier seconds later.
