GUNNISON, Colo. --- The Western Colorado wrestling team looks to secure second place in the RMAC final standings while honoring its lone senior, graduating redshirt juniors and faculty and staff as the Mountaineers host Colorado Mesa 6 p.m. Wednesday at Paul Wright Gym.
WCU and the Mavericks both enter the dual at 5-1 - tied for second in the RMAC. Colorado School of Mines has already clinched the RMAC title - closing out the season 7-0 after defeating CSU-Pueblo on Friday.
It will be the second dual between these teams this season as the Mountaineers fell 24-22 in a non-RMAC dual in Grand Junction on Dec. 5. WCU started strong as
Patrick Allis (125 pounds) and
Cody Fatzinger (133) each picked up major decision wins while
Jason Hanenberg pinned his opponent at 141 pounds as the Mountaineers led 14-0. But WCU won just two more matches the rest of the dual -
Hunter Mullin picking up a win at 184 pounds and
Sammy deSeriere winning via tech fall at 285.
Since suffering it's lone RMAC loss to Colorado School of Mines on Feb. 1 (19-13), the Mountaineers won a pair of RMAC duals with victories at New Mexico Highlands (35-6) and at CSU-Pueblo (23-18) on Feb. 7 and 8, respectively. Fatzinger had a strong week that included beating a ranked wrestler as he was named the RMAC Wrestler of the Week.
The Mavs' one RMAC loss this season was to Colorado School of Mines, 28-11, but they have won their last three duals - a 45-0 win over No. 12 San Francisco State, a 35-6 win at New Mexico Highlands and a 27-17 win at No. 13 Adams State.
The Mountaineers are 29-26-1 all-time against Colorado Mesa after dropping the non-RMAC dual earlier this season.
