GUNNISON, Colo. --- The Western Colorado women's basketball team has a key RMAC week coming up on the road as the Mountaineers face two of the top four teams in the conference standings in taking on No. 15 Westminster 5:30 p.m. Friday and Dixie State 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Mountaineers sit in third place in the RMACÂ at 9-2, a game back of Westminster for second place, while Dixie State sits in a tie for fourth with three other teams at 7-4 - two games back of WCU.Â
The three teams are also ranked in the
D2SIDAÂ Regional Rankings with Westminster at No. 5, Western Colorado at No. 7 and Dixie State at No. 10.
MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEK | SEASON STATS
WCU stayed perfect at home last week with a win over Fort Lewis (tied for fourth with Dixie State now) 84-72 on Friday behind a 28-point night from
Gabie Doud (24 coming in the first half) and followed it up with a 61-44 victory over Adams State on Saturday led by 14 points, two blocks and two steals from
Katie Dalton.
The Mountaineers continue to do it defensively - ranked second in the RMAC and 13th in the nation in scoring defense at 53.6 points per game. WCU also is in the top 20 in Division II in field goal percentage defense (34.4 percent - 17th) and 3-point percentage defense (25.9 percent - 12th).
Freshman
Hannah Cooper leads the team in scoring (10.1), assists (3.3 - ninth in the RMAC) and steals (1.4 - 11th) to go along with 3.7 rebounds per game and shooting 80 percent from the free throw line and 40 percent from 3-point range.
Samantha Coleman is second on the team in scoring at 9.9 points per game and leads the team with 35 3-pointers, Doud is averaging 9.7 points and a team-best 6.1 rebounds and Dalton is averaging 8.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and a team-best 1.1 blocks (fourth in the RMAC).
WESTMINSTER HEADING INTO THIS WEEK | SEASON STATS
The Griffins had a pair of double-figure home wins last week, defeating Regis 73-57 led by 28 points from Sarah McGinley (thanks to 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range) and beating Colorado Christian 74-44 behind 18 points, eight rebounds and three blocks from Hunter Krebs.
Westminster enters the week as the top scoring team in the RMAC at 69.8 points per game while the Griffins rank sixth in the country and first in the RMACÂ in 3-point percentage at 39.3 percent. They are also tops in the conference and 17th in the country in field goal percentage at 46.5 percent.
The Griffins have three players averaging 15-plus points per game in Mariah Martin (16.6), Krebs (16.0) and McGinley (15.0). Krebs leads the conference and is seventh in the NCAA in field goal percentage (62.2) while McGinley ranks in the top 20 in Division II in 3-point field goal percentage (50 percent - third in the NCAA), 3-pointers made (51 - 19th) and 3-pointers per game (3.0 - 20th). Martin leads the team at 4.3 assists per game, Kaitlin Toluono is tops on the team at 7.9 rebounds per game and Kaylee Carlsen leads the tam in steals at 1.7 per contest.
Westminster does play with a relatively short bench as seven players average 18.2 minutes or more per game and played in 15 or more games. No other player has played in more than eight gmaes and average more than 5.1 minutes per contest.
DIXIE STATE HEADING INTO THIS WEEK | SEASON STATS
The Trailblazers split their games at home last week, beating Colorado Christian on Friday 61-54 after outscoring the Cougars 21-9 in the fourth quarter and falling to Regis 77-68 on Saturday despite getting 26 points from Ali Franks.
Dixie State is second in the RMACÂ in scoring at 68.9 points per game while the Trailblazers are seventh in points allowed at 61.4 points per contest. DSU is second in 3-point field goal percentage (34.1 percent) in the conference and lead the RMACÂ in 3-pointers made (137).
Franks leads the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game to go along with 4.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.5 blocks. She's shooting 45.5 percent from 3-point range as well. Madi Loftus is second on the team in scoring at 12.1 points per game.
